Vapor set off my Smoke Detector

The other day I was vaping while sitting on my comfy leather recliner that is directly below my smoke detector, to my surprise my vapor set off my smoke detector. At first I panicked thinking something in my house might actually be on fire, but a quick experiment of me blowing my vapor directly into the smoke detector confirmed it was my vapor. It turns out some smoke detectors work with an infrared beam of light and any particle that breaks the beam sets off the smoke detector. I had no idea that is how smoke detectors work

I was under the impression I could vape in a few places I shouldn't be without getting caught by things like smoke detectors :D.

I'm sure this is old news for some, but it caught me by surprise.

LOL I set off ours but took 5 good rips and blown directly in it. I was curious if it would set off when my mom relayed her story about setting off a hotel one recently.
She had the foresight ti go crank the shower to OMFG steam and bullshit her way out of the whole thing.

LOL that was clever! I have vaped in a few Non Smoking hotel rooms without giving the smoke detector a second thought.

I was not blowing huge clouds, (1.2 ohm coil and 70/30 VG/PG Juice) just casual vaping like I have done dozens of times before sitting in my recliner. That is why it surprised me so much.

I did this at my house a few weeks ago. I was mixing some juice and testing it and that sucker went off at 2am while my wife and kids were sleeping...

That's how I found out there are two different types of smoke detectors. One type shouldn't be set off by vaping. I have the other type.

Yeah, I have done this as well.
I try not to blow clouds right in its vicinity after setting mine off

I can confirm that blowing clouds under a smoke detector will set it off!

I think it's the density of the vapor that causes the detector to think there are fumes around.

I've set off a few, the worst though was back in 2009-2010 when I first started vaping and set off the alarm at my work vaping in the bathroom.

Guilty here to. We replaced some batteries in one of ours and in between getting it reinstalled it was sitting on the coffee table. Set that thing of sitting there 3 times in the matter of ten minutes. Scared the heck out of me at first haha.
