Too Sweet question

Okay, been working through a recipe for the past 3 days. A dozen samples steeping, all the while vaping on a few as I go.

I've got the taste where I want it. But I have a couple of bottles that are too sweet.

So my question is, (for future reference) is there anything I can add to a mix to take away from the sweetness? With little or no impact on the original flavor?

Simple answer would be make a batch without the sweetener, then add it to the one that's too sweet. End of story. But I'm not always in a position I can do this. Thus my question.

You use sweetener, and want it less sweet, but you're not always in a position to use less sweetener, or no sweetener at all?

Well, have you tried some without any sweetener? You might be pleasantly surprised how sweet they are without. Making another mix without sweetener could help, yes, but if you do that, try it before you mix them. I have sweetener, but I bought it for some store bought I got a LONG time ago. I haven't used it at all in DIY. I find most stuff plenty sweet without it, or after a couple days.

I see this isn't going to explain itself LOL

I have adjusted my mix. So any MORE of that recipe with be correct. However, I often don't have time to do everything when it needs to be done.

An example:
I just created a small sample. It vaped 110% on my taste scale. So I mixed 240ml to take with me on the road. Day 2 comes along, and I'm deciding its just simply too sweet to be vaping for another 10 days.

There are ONLY 2 options I have. Carry a second 240ml bottle with no sweetener. Or carry a few ml of something that will reduce it.

Can you feel me now?

Yeah, I think I do. This is how I'm seeing it, though. You're mixing your juice to your liking. After a day or so, it's too sweet for an all day every day for then next 10 days, which certainly can happen. Is this mix fruity, dessert, tobacco? Does this mix already contain sweetener, or is it just becoming naturally sweet over time? Knowing what type of juice it is can help us help you. Some say that Bitter Wizard works, but is best for tobaccos. You could try the vinegar trick, some say it pops and brightens fruit flavors. If it's a dessert type flavor, a nut flavoring might give something to tone down the sweetness. Kind of hard to say without know what it is, though.

Just saying, that FOR the future, if this does contain sweetener, reduce or omit it and see how it is in a few days, the next time you have this chance. Or reduce the flavoring even. Trying to help, really, just hard to make suggestions without more particulars.

It's a fruity desert, that became sweeter lol I've gotten it taken care of, just wanted info for future reference.
I keep more detailed notes too. But they're absolutely no good while I'm on the road. I just can't carry a lot of things with me.

This particular one was a lesson in; Given time, Less is always more. Much more :/

Thanks for the tips.

This is why I mix 20 ml samplers rather than smaller amounts - it lets me stay with a flavor for a few days to see how it changes before mixing a massive batch. The only tried and true method I have for a recipe with added sweetener that's too sweet is to mix a new batch with less sweetener...

I'm like Huck. I bought Sweetener, Smooth, and EM on my first DIY order. I messed around with them a little in the beginning. Now I never use them. Most mixes I find sweet enough for my tastes. If I do want a little extra sweetness, I'll add a percent or 2 of marshmallow. I've found if I don't over flavor I don't need the bandaids (like smooth/EM).

Now if I did have a mix I find too sweet. I guess I might try adding a drop or 2 of lemon juice to a tank too see if that helps (I'm talking about the kind in a grocery store, like the little yellow squeeze bottles).

Not saying there is a right way or a wrong way to mix. Heck we all have different tastes and there are lots of roads that lead to the same destination. What works for me might not work for you and vice versa.

Cheers,
Steve

I had considered the lemon juice. But I wasn't sure. Thanks for the tip. We keep a bottle for cooking, and it would be really simple to squirt a bit in a 10ml bottle to keep in my carry box while on the road.

More like:

Open top
Pour into container with reduced or no sweetener.

Repeat until desired results are obtained.
I'm not in a hurry, unless I'm on the road with no access to my supplies.

agreed if you are on the road and thats all the juice you have of coarse mix them and vape. better than not vaping but I think everyone is also under the impression you are trying to adujst some samples to make a perfect recipe but you cant work on and adjust a recipe like that, especially with sweetener and especially if one of them is to much. sweetener is a juice destroyer if its to much it will ruin everything it touches :/ it would take a lot of unsweetened juice to do justice and then it no longer a sample size and you have 30mls of something you have no idea how to replicate because its been added to so much.

a good tip for things like sweetener and tobacco or coffee flavors that are very easy to over do is get the other flavors right first or close to and then add 0.25 % (or lower depending on flavor) of the stronger flavor and leave it alone. if its not right just vape it up, it cant be that bad and the next time make the same but add another 0.25% of the strong flavor. for example a vanilla coffee. dont start with coffee if you are not familiar with the ingredient, get your vanilla right first then add the star flavor. same with sweetener.

If what you have in your hand isnt what you want you may as well write it off or vape it and try again next time. when I think tester size I imagine 5-15mls tops. even at that if you have 15mls you dont like and you keep adding to it odds are you will end up with 30 mls you dint like

Then repeat the above steps with the bottle of Sweetener:D.

Much better to use flavorings to add some sweetness IMO.
TFA Brown Sugar
Marshmallow
FA Meringue
etc.

.....

NJoy much? I know that's not DIY. But yes, some things can be that bad. o_O And I'm still trying to ramp up enough courage to try this "American Gold" tobacco flavor a second time. It's been sitting on my shelf for 3 months now.
