How to adjust pH with indicator strips - citric acid

Hello folks,

I thought I'd make a quick guide on how to adjust the pH of ejuice using 10% citric acid monohydrate in PG. This is not a post regarding pros and cons of adjusting pH but merely a 'how to' guide for people interested in doing it. NB: lowering the pH of your ejuice will reduce the amount of available free base nicotine somewhat.

I will use 7.0-14 pH indicator strips, a jar of deionised water, 10% wt/wt solution of citric acid monohydrate in PG, a clean skewer and a syringe with needle. The juice I am working with is a HIC peach tea, max VG, 6mg/ml nicotine strength.

1) dip a pH strip in the DI water and then smear a little juice on the coloured squares using one end of the clean skewer. You will see an almost instant colour change. In my case, comparison with the chart on the box revealed a pH of between 8 and 8.5

2) using the syringe add the citric acid solution to the juice dropwise. Be careful as it's very easy to overshoot the pH. As a rough guide I have found that 10 drops of citric acid solution per 10ml of ejuice will lower the pH by one unit. Using the clean end of the skewer smear a new wetted strip. Compare to chart and adjust pH accordingly.
In my case I had managed to lower the pH to the desired 7 to 7.5 mark (bottom strip).

And there you have it. Please post comments/questions below!

I use extremely diluted Phosphoric acid to get my beer brewing mash water (cracked malted grains steeping in water at 160) to 5.9-6.0Ph so the enzymes in the grain can convert the starch into maltose more efficiently.

Why are you adding citric acid to your ejuice? Tartness?

pH has an effect on how we perceive flavour. Some juices might benefit (and this is entirely subjective of course!) from lowering their pH, eg adding lemon juice to make fruit flavours. Problem with adding lemon juice is that you are adding sugars and other substances to your juice, while using citric acid is a 'cleaner' method to achieve this. I have noticed flavours becoming muted with lemon juice but not with citric. This post is meant for people that like to have a more scientific approach to adjusting e juice, if they're interested in doing that of course!
