Getting very inconsistent results from Subtank mini

Hello,

I'm currently vaping some (diacetyl free) popcorn flavour that is 30/70 VG using the 1.5 ohm OCC coil (my Kbox mod reads it at 1.6?) that came in my subox kit. The coil is practically new since I've have it for a few days only.

My issue is that although Im vaping consistently at the same wattage, occasionally I get delicious creamy flavourful draws and other times bland draws and other times downright right gag worthy dry hits. I've tried poking at the sides of the coil with a pin but the cotton seems rock hard so I don't think I made much difference.

Any idea why I'm getting such inconsistant performance? Could it be that my mod is faulty?

Quality control issue maybe?
Learn to reroll or pop another coil in.

Hmmm this seems to be a consistent issue I know others have talked about this I know on my subtank I no longer have I had ohm jumping randomly never could get it fixed..

I use the rba head but i've read that pulling out some cotton helps like you said it's way over packed

Kanger has QC issues, the aerotank out of package on my last kanger purchase was shorting out.

What's strange is that I see people rebuild the OCC coils but mine doesn't have a slit in the metal. It is just one solid piece. Is it only the replacement atomizers that have a top part that you can pry off?. I might try the Rba tomorrow to see if it's better.

Where would you suggest pulling the cotton from. The juice holes? I don't want to break the coil.

I'd pull from the top and try to fluff it up from the juice holes and also I've read that clones are the worst with over packed cotton are you sure there the real deal?

If the juice is really thick.. it may not be wicking fast enough for that ohm coil. I have 2 subtanks and never get a dry hit on either one. But, I'm using the .5ohm coils.

Well, I bought the kit and it came bubble wrapped. I doubt someone tried to open it and swap it out.

Today I wicked the RBA and I'm getting much better results. I'm running the coil reading at .6 ohms at 20.4W and I'm getting good vapor and much better flavour. It's more pronounced and the different flavourings are really coming through, like I can taste each flavour in the mixture. I get some slight popping and crackling though, which I guess is normal.

I'm surprised people run .6 coils in the 30W range. Already over 22-23W I could feel the delrin tip getting hot. Perhaps its a matter of preference.

I have 2 questions: how do I recognize that my coil/wick must be changed? Also, when the wick must be replaced, is it necessary to also replace the coil every time?

Thanks

One possible issue with large tanks if you're not going through them quickly is flavor separation. Need to shake it just like a bottle.

My mint will do this and flood the wick with nothing but menthol. After that's gone it's nothing but bland mint left.

Just give it a quick swirl occasionally to issue there's no separation. This should address the issue. I'm not really sure it does. But I do it often.

The cracking and popping is normal, as the juice heats.

You'll know when the wick needs replacing :)

The coil is optional. I generally pulse and hold mine, to burn the gunk off. Look up coil cleaning videos too see how it's done.

Be careful not to hold the button too long. Or you'll simply get to watch your coil collapse from the heat.

And yes, wattage is a personal preference. Mine fluctuates depending on the mod and/or juice I use.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try and look into some coil cleaning videos. Maybe I can clean the coil with a little rubbing alcohol and a q tip? Enjoying my tank much more with the rba and wicking was a breeze after messing up twice, LOL. I found out the hard way that the cotton is a bunch of threads and if you cut it perpendicular to the threads, your little strip will simply fall apart when threading it through the coil (doh).

Do not use rubbing alcohol it is freaking poison use Ethy alcohol only .. grab some Vodka or better Everclear..
Dear god whoever suggested rubbing alcohol should be spanked in the face!!!

Ok, I frequently use rubbing alcohol to clean things, albeit not food utensils or vaping equipment. I like it because it evaporates so quickly so I didn't think it would be inappropriate for cleaning a coil. Thanks for the heads up, I'll try vodka.

Acetone or toluene are great cleaners too, but I wouldn't want them on my coil.

I use a small jar of vodka and put it in the ultrasonic for a major cleaning.
For TC coils I just rub them with water or wrap a new one. Usually replace wick once, then a new coil. It's less than 10¢ and a little more time than trying to clean it to wrap a new one.

I have a question about the rba section. when you are wicking how much or where are you cutting it at. I have been cutting it like even with the lip where the chimmey goes down at and it seems when I get anywhere above 20 W it get like a cotton taste and not vape flavor. am I cutting it to short or to long? I love to use the wide open AFC also. I have the rba section with the screw if that matters.

If your cutting it off where I think you are that's about right but also you want the wick to taper at the tips. What I do is push the wick down to the holes and than with your screw driver push into the holes to make a pocket so the juice flows in. I found if your wick sits against the holes there's to much surface tension and juice won't flow right. But also how many watts you can push depends on your build i'm useing twisted 26g around 3mm 5/6 wrap at 0.5 ohms and still can't get much over 30 watts

I just tried pushing it in. I get a halfway decent flavor with the medium AFC and about 11 W. But I have the pre built .5 ohm single coils from vapordna. the baggy says kanthol but then its crossed out in permanent marker. I did just order some 24 and 28 gauge wire along with the mutation x v4 with ipv 4s so I will start building once it gets here. I also have dr crimmy berry cruch xtra flavor shot xtra sweet cream 70/30 3 mg nic. I love his flavors well the first time I got it but this one just doesn't seem right. I have the same but the pebbles flavor sitting away till this is gone.

I found new cotton has a taste. It goes away faster but is stronger the more power that's used.

Try twisted wire I really didn't think it would make a big deal but I was wrong the flavor is so much better

Ya I just been useing a pair of vice grips and the screw driver just put the open ends in vice grip put screw driver through the loop end pull a little to cause tension and spin the screwdriver takes a min but it's not that bad or any pair of plyers will do really

Oh and also if you use twisted make sure the post screws are extra tight or the ohms will bounce like crazy
