Claptons

I have built hive coils I want to build a nice Clapton. My question is what gauge wires would be best in your honest opinion.

For the outer wire you want 34g at the thickest. I mean, 32 is useable, but it's not ideal. Thinner outer wire makes for better flavor and really cuts down on the time it takes to heat up. It's harder to work with, but very worth the trouble. The resistance of the outer wire is well into the double-digits, so it doesn't pull much current. The core will be heating it up, so you don't want too much mass on there.

24 or 26 works well for the core, single core or fused. You can even go as low as 28 for fused or a single-core that runs well at lower power levels.

I agree entirely with the statement above. Just for general use i typically grab 36g or 38g for most claptons. If yer after the flavor that's the way to go!

In my limited experience with simple clapton builds, I've found I prefer 32g for the wrap wire. Higher gauges result in a wire so smooth it doesn't seem to be much different than a lower gauge round wire build. I notice more of a change in performance with the bigger grooves the thicker wrap wire provides. It just seems to heat the juice and the air real nice with the extra diameter and surface area. Just what I've found so far. Anyway, I have realized some of this fancy build stuff is worth playing with. Seems it really can change your vape for the better. Good luck.

I haven't build any Clapton coils myself. I was wondering if a 24g or 26g of SS wire as the core, and a 32g Kanthal outer wire would work. I'm thinking a 24g SS for a single coil build, and the 26g for a dual coil build.

I'd be curious on this as well, that's actually exactly the wire I was thinking of buying and making but wasn't sure if it was a terrible idea or not. I've been growing impatient on the chinese shippers to get me my wire so I was going to grab some stuff from somewhere closer and those were the exact things I had on my list (and a 36g Kanthal).

I don't see why not. I'm imagining it's about as forgiving as nichrome to work with - they're both more pliable than kanthal. It's just going to ohm lower and heat up faster than kanthal, wrap for wrap. Might come in handy for getting the power level down. Might perform better than kanthal with thicker outer wire, like 30 or 32.

I have some 24g 316l. Maybe I'll give this a try soon. I just don't use 24g for claptons in general, so I never thought to try it.

I've been playing around with both 24 and 26 gauge kanthal wrapped with 32g kanthal for dual coil rda on a tube mech use. I can't seem to be able to use the amount of wire I want and still get the heat I want. A ss core might be exactly what I need. Keep the geometry and bump the power. Hmmm....

30 on 25 kanthal is what i use 2.7mm inner diameter 7 wraps a piece total .4 duals. i use to use a mech. after i got a box i tried claptons. then for S&G's i tried them on the old mech, just couldnt keep up with the current draw. my coils wont run well below 35w 3.7 volts (no prob though you can use thinner wire i made a clapton for my bros mech i use 32 on 28) runs great 40w 4v though! 50w 4.4 is a little too hot for my charlies custard but it sure as hell makes you look like your house is on fire! now i cant speak how well flavor is unless its with a derringer(flavor is fanF'ntastic in a derringer with the said setup) but the clouds from the coils are awesome in and rda. (with any clapton you make i advise trying this)
when you wrap the outer wire onto the core wire get the outer as close as possible to its self and get it good and tight on the core so the core is snug tight to where it cant be pulled out or slide.
then clip the outer wire at the ends(after the wires have been ''claptoned'')leaving a few mm of core wire for legs.
dont run the outer wire through the posts.
just the core.
the outer wire acts like a pan on the eye of the stove distributing the heat from the eye/core wire evenly along the wick/your food.
after the clapton is done, when you go to wrap, dont pull the wire around your tool, roll it on. while doing this all the ridges(formed by the spiraled outer wire) will be evenly spaced apart creating more and proportionate heated surface area. hope this helps!

My other thought was, what if it could be used with TC on a DNA 200 mod. Now, that would be awesome!

I tried making my own. I lost count of how much wire I wasted messing with it. I started using the 26/32 premade from UD. The wire is perfect and it is easy to work with. I'll give DIY another go eventually since the weather is taking a turn. Vapor Joe just posted a link for 15ft of premade for less than $4.

Did you use a swivel and a drill?

I used a drill and a hollow needle to feed the outter wire. The problem I was having is that after a few inches it wanted to wrap back over itself in the wrong direction. Most likely trying to go too quickly and not being patient enough. I'll have to give that trick a try the next go around. Thanks for the tip!

I use a fishing swivel that's secured to something to hold the loose end of the core wire, feed the wrap wire by hand and I don't run the drill too fast. My first attempt was perfect. Second attempt wasn't as I ran the drill too fast. Another thing I've noticed with my cheap wire is I have to use a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol to clean the wire first. The first couple wipes on the wire result in the cotton ball turning black. After a couple wipes the black stuff is all gone from the wire. Not sure if all wire is as dirty as mine, but I'm sure glad I decided to clean it. Anyway, just some rambling thoughts.

Don't buy that from GearBest. Many people (including myself) ordered that in July/August and still haven't received the wire.

Too late lol, I pulled the trigger early this morning. Oh well, I have plenty left. It'll be a nice surprise when it shows up someday. Maybe a nice St Patty's day gift...

Hopefully you'll do better than we did. I've since learned to Clapton, and many variations of the Clapton.

All of my Clapton's are that besides kanthal
26ss inner and 32 or 34 nichrome outer. I don't like kanthal.

You should be thankful to GearBest, for having learned a set of new skills. :)
