Micro: 2mm (or less) inside diameter, 7-8 wrap, 22g sleeper build @ .2ohms! Not fancy, but kicking like a mule!

Macro for drippers, micro for rta. All horizontal...because airflow is king.

I always thought 2mm was considered a micro coil. But searching it out apparently micro coils are 1.6mm and a bit smaller. Who knew. So with that being said I guess I run macro coils. I use a 2.4mm screwdriver for all of my rebuildables and a 2mm for my PTII builds.

What is a sleeper coil?

I use mostly micro coils but I have played with nano, macro, dragon, and a few others.
A sleeper coil is one piece of wire, with at least two coils on it, wrap one coil with extra long positive lead run it through the posts and then wrap second coil on the other side

Thanks. Are there benefits? I'll have to try.

Another benefit is, when using thicker gauge/twisted wire, it is difficult or impossible to get more than one strand through the positive post hole; which would make it impossible to run dual coils. With the sleeper build, I'm running dual 22g (an extremely thick wire!) 8-9 wrap micro coils @ .2ohms on an IGO-W with REALLY good results!

Yeah, it gives you some leeway for thicker gauge wire. It's especially useful now that people are starting to use wire under 24g. Instead of drilling out your posts, you can just use that method. Works well.

I use 28 Kanthal in micro builds for rebuilding t-coils on the Kanger heads and single coil my Nautilus heads (gonna try dual coil rebuild soon). I use 24 in macro and micro for my rda's depending on rda size. I like the idea of the sleeper coil because I have already run into issues with the center posts fitting 2 wires on most of my rda dual coil builds.

Hmm, 1.4-1.8mm is a fave size range. I suppose most of mine are micro then.
But, I do all sizes from 1.2mm to 3mm depending on the atty, number of coils, available wire and the ohms I want.

To me, they are just contact coils. The size depends on the usage....they don't need a label.

2 mm micro, 28 gauge kanthal goes in most my attys. 26 gauge in the dripper if I'm going low with a 1.5 mm micro.

I think the overwhelming majority believes as you and I did in that approximately 1.4(ish)mms to 2mms were considered micro coils. However, purist would give more precise parameters and the reasons for their definitions. So, right or wrong, I still consider 2mm a micro.

Hurricane coil:

I think more a novelty build though, at least from my perspective. The flavor and vapor production is very good, but not worth the extra time and effort to build when you could just make several "plain vanilla" micro-coils in the same time which produces just as good of a vape as any.

1/16 bit (is that the same as 16 gauge?) is my personal preference for micro coils:

2rzszeu.jpg

With a single coil setup, it only takes about 2-3 minutes to wrap, compress, mount and wick since you don't have to match/duplicate a 2nd. I also find the flavor is better on a single coil, with very little, if any noticeable drop in vapor output. Yes, there is a difference, but not enough for me to take the extra time to duplicate a second coil and wick ;)

BTW, this was a 1 ohm build using 28g Kanthal, 7-8 wraps on a 1/16 bit.

Here's another one from a while back:

Another single coil on a 1/16 bit, I think around 1 ohm as well using 28g wire.

Nowadays for single coil dripper builds, I prefer using 26g wire at around .4-.5ohms. For tank rebuildables like the Kayfun or Taifun. still use 28g at around 1-1.2 ohms.

A sleeper coil is a dual coil where you use only one piece of wire, instead of two :)

Trying to rebuild a Nautilus coil - watched all the youtube vids BUT my ohm numbers keep coming out wrong... my 4 wraps of 32 Kanthal was 2.13 where most of the vids were getting 1.6 with 8 wraps - looking to get around 1.6ohms - obvious newbie here - anyone help??? Thanks!

8 wraps of 28g Kanthal on 5/64th drill bit. I've tried it several times with ohms between 1.4 to 1.5. Learned it from Rip Tripper here...

nice coils here. Still too new to have a set coil choice. Looking and reading about the different coils just opens up a new world for me.
thanks..

Go down to 30 Kanthal and 5 - 7 wraps at 2mm, loose and torch. Don't cramp the coils together. If you really want flavor and a ton of vape (for a Nautilus) drill out two of the vent holes and run boiled organic cotton all the way through the whole coil body and coil and let them extend up to the threads on the outside of the body. Make sure and wet the cotton on both the inside and outside of the coil to jumpstart the flow. To increase the air flow drill out the vent hole on the outside to 2 or 3 mm. Remember low watts 3 and low airflow = tons of flavor, high watts 10 - 15 and lots of air = tons of clouds. I can continuous vape my modified Nautilus tanks all day from 3 - 8 watts going through 10 - 15 ml of juice and 2 18650 batteries and never a dry hit. Occasional 10 - 15 watt vapes also for a big plume (comparable to some of my RDA's).

Micro-parallel coils. 26-28 gauge, 5 wraps, 1/16 or 5/64 ID. These parallel coils can put out some serious clouds, heat up super fast on mech mods with fresh batteries.

I broke the coil in my Kayfun on the 4th.. I wrapped 30g Kanthal around an 18 ga needle I did manage a perfect 1.4 ohm (I have a lavatube) Maybe you can tell ME what it is.. I have no idea.. It just works hahaha

It's always cool to see all the fancy builds. I'm pretty vanilla with my builds which are always just a single coil for my KFLs. I snipped about a 6" piece of metal from the bottom of a metal coat hanger and using 30 gauge wire with about 10 wraps I typically end-up with about a 2Ω coil which suits my needs. I typically vape this between 10-15 watts.

That's what's cool about this hobby addiction. We can all learn from each other and tailor our coils for our own tastes. Happy vaping!
