As far as anime goes, my personal top 3 faves would be Trigun, Chobits and Death Note.

I'm currently watching Naruto these days in my spare time.

Death Note is super good!

I'm watching the first Naruto and yes, there's a lot of episodes. We have the seasons on DVD so I just watch it periodically here and there but I binge watch the shit out of the other 3 listed above. Haha!

And yes, Trigun is great; I'm so in love with that anime, I almost named my son Vash or Knives. :D

I used to record Tom & Jerry throughout the day and then watch it at night before I went to sleep. T&J was a personal kid favorite of mine.

I usually watch mine during work, I work 7 days a week 10-12 hours a day usually and kind of half watch half listen when I can and everyone in my office isn't up my ass.
Then when I find something I really Ike I go back and marathon re-watch on my one or two days off a month.

And as far as standard cartoons go , there isn't a day that goes by that my tvs aren't tuned to cartoon network between the kids stuff during the day and adult swim at night that channel rarely gets changed

Saw some mentions of Space Dandy but no mention of Redline (if there was I missed it, sorry). Certainly a must see, it's basically about a more badass/more realistic/serious Dandy. It's basically him in a former life. Great movie, easily up there near the top for Anime Movies (I'm a Miyazaki fan, so that takes like all 5 top anime slots for me... if you count those as anime).

As for Anime websites, Animehaven.org, Otakucenter, and Crunchyroll are my go-to's.

For ones I really liked but haven't seen listed:
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (make sure it's Brotherhood, they both start out the same but the first run through deviated from the manga and had a funky ending, still good IMO but no where close to Brotherhood)

Code Geass (one of the only mech anime's I liked, not big into the giant robot stuff)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Ok, so, you HAVE to give this one 4 episodes before you brush it off, one of the most badass/mindfucking anime's I've seen, but it starts out as a very girly anime then just punches you in the face at the end of episode 3)

One Punch (currently running not many episodes yet, but makes me crack up every episode and it's pretty badass, about a guy who can kill anything in one punch...)

Yu Yu Hakisho

I still watch Naruto and One Piece but can't really suggest someone watches 700+ episodes of something, not everyone is insane like me.

I've watched Akame Ga Kill, very solid. Kill la Kill is great as well but one of those that seems silly and nonsensical till much later in the show. Trigun is IMO probably the greatest of all time, just a perfect anime. Cowboy Beebop is great, Samurai Champloo, and of course Ghost in a Shell (movies are solid as well though weird animation). Berserk is just amazing, I still need to read the manga because there's so much to that story that neither the movie or the anime even get close to. Really liked the first saga for Roroni Kenshin (sp) it got worse and worse after each major confrontation, but the beginning was excellent. Hellsing (both original and ultimate) were great and I was sad when they ended. Hunter X Hunter is fantastic but leaves you hanging with likely no true ending ever coming.

Deathnote was solid but I feel a bit overhyped (or maybe I just feel that way having too many anime nerf friends). Black Butler is cool but a bit creepy.

Ehh that's all I can think of right now. I've watched a lot of anime over the years.

Yea, I'm a little surprised nobody mentioned either of the fma series , im a fan of both. I am also surprised nobody has mentioned Tokyo Ghoul either for that matter.

I feel the same way about hellsing I was totally bummed !

I haven't gotten into one punch yet tho I am tempted, cuz I am already caught up in a couple that are ongoing series and I don't wanna get myself too confused lol.

Have you watched any Gangsta at all ? At first I was not too into it but it's def growing on me.

Yea I was pretty fond of it , kinda like puella how it starts off kind of kiddie feeling and than becomes all about ass kicking. I thought Ban was a pretty bad ass character.

Watching this Ecchi/Mecha called Daimidaler it's so absurd it's actually comical lol basically a kid that fuels a giant robot that fights giant penguins by groping chicks.

Almost like DXD just more comical.

Food Wars! I knew I was forgetting a good one. Some weird stuff (orgasmic tasting food ) but still, it looks fantastic and I want someone to make me those dishes, especially the one in the first episode. Anyways good show, glad it got picked up for a second season.

Fate/Zero was amazing.

People give the Fate franchise in general a lot of crap for all of the expository dialogue/incoherent nature of the nasuverse... ...and I'd tend to agree with them 99% of the time, but with all of that Ufotable polish, my eyes are so glued to the screen that I almost don't care what's going on. Everything just looks so fantastic. Yuki Kaijura was so in her element on the soundtrack. The battle scenes contain some of the best digital animation I've ever seen. It's right up there with the Kara no Kyoukai movies. Ufotable was really on fire back then.

You mean my favorite scene? Now that I think about it, hard to say. Been a while since I've seen it. Might be a good way to wash the taste of UBW off of my palate. I should get on that.

I can tell you what my favorite Ufotable fight scene of all time is. The apartment complex balcony zombie fight in KnK 5. That shit was BANANAS. Bananas and cream. Triple banana sundaes.

This one.

So, I'm catching up on Owarimonogatari at the moment. I actually like the first arc. It's good to to see them returning to form with some actual storytelling. And now it's Shinobu time. I've been waiting for this arc since the opening of the first ep of Bakemonogatari.

I also saw something in Shafts production (or maybe Shinbo's direction) that I never really appreciated before. There are these little split second shots of panning across characters' faces and really finely-animated, detailed facial expression changes. I've caught them before but they always passed by so fast that I never paid them any mind. I'm not talking about the neck-tilts. I'm talking about when they play the pans conventionally... ...usually at the exact moment when a conversation makes an abrupt tonal shift.

The camera seems to swoop across their faces at the pivotal moment when their expression blooms into a moving tapestry of subtle emotions. You see everything that's between the lines of the cryptic dialogue in the blink of an eye. I just think it's really cool, just how much nuance they can squeeze into a little flicker. It's just like real-life interactions. People only drop their facades for a split second. It's easy to miss but when you do happen to catch it, it's so attention-grabbing that it makes you fumble your thoughts for a second.

Sometimes, I swear it's the little things that Shaft does with their presentation and delivery that keep me watching the monogatari series. The style is simple, but the attention to detail is amazing. If you really sit down and examine it, there's a lot going on at any given time. If you think it's all palette swaps, fan-service shots, and odd angles/compositions, then you're not paying attention. They really know how to make each frame count. It's all very carefully orchestrated. Their approach is very fascinating to me.

But anywho, I'm thinking about revisiting Zankyou no Terror. I watched it as it aired and I really enjoyed it, but something about it left me wanting. I'm curious to see how my viewpoint will differ watching it in succession rather than week by week.

Ahh, yeah. Definitely agree there. It's right up there with Sword of the Stranger and the Cowboy Bebop movie.

But anywho, it's from Kara no Kyoukai, which is a series of 7 hour-long movies (well, there are technically 8 and 2 OVA's, but the 7 movies are the heart of the franchise.) There are subs aplenty.

You can watch the 7 main ones subbed in full 1080p over on the aforementioned kissanime.to. kissanime rules. They have pretty much every anime that's ever been published/digitized uploaded in HD (except for things that are really obscure or not available in HD - those tend to be 480.) It's all free, too. Kicks the shit out of Crunchyroll and Funimation. You will literally never have to look anywhere else. They even keep up with ongoing shows.

If you like that, then another show that would be of interest to you is Fate/Zero. There are two versions, the older one is done by Studio DEEN and is god awful - don't bother. The 2011 adaptation, however, was done by Ufotable, the same studio that did the fight scene I posted. The fight scenes in that are just as epic.

Watched Fate/zero and started the second set, but gave up quickly as it just didn't have "it". I'll be sure to check it out. I've watched a lot of Anime but not having many suggestions lately, and diving in to some older recommendations of live stuff (been rewatching NG star trek and keeping up with the new superhero shows, as well as a few ongoing animes, aside from reading a few books I've been putting off... then of course coiling new builds  in my free time, working on a twisted core clapton right now) Anyways, glad to have some more anime suggestions. I've watched just about everything listed in this thread so far, the few I haven't I started but just didn't get that hook to keep watching, but that clip certainly has me interested.

At this point I'm always skeptical about Anime's and animated thing in general. They're usually a bit more out there, I assume cheaper to produce but honestly I'm not sure of that. But I've seen enough bad ones to trigger my concern of wasting time. If I get a recommendation I'll give it 3-4 episodes but if it doesn't' hook me by then I'm out. I know that some animes take that long (case in point probably my favorite Madoka Magica) but to leave you wanting beyond that is simply poor design.

Thank you though, that's a few nice tips you've given me today. Appreciate it.

Response: Cowboy Bobop and Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex

Those were god ones. I kinda fell asleep on Stand Alone Complex, but I liked the original Ghost in the Shell.

At this point I'm always skeptical about Anime's and animated thing in general. They're usually a bit more out there, I assume cheaper to produce but honestly I'm not sure of that.
I remember reading somewhere that it can actually take anywhere from fifty to several hundred thousand dollars to produce a single episode. I actually think its interesting how the medium allows them to get all of these weird and unique things across... ...I like the fact that it is able to be so weird and out there, sometimes on the cheap. Some studios find interesting ways to get around that budget problem. Since you mentioned Madoka, I've got to mention Shaft. Lots of people think that Shaft is a higher-budget studio, but they actually aren't. They use a lot of tricks with the production to make you think it's production-heavy as fuck, when really its much cheaper to go the route they do with their signature style. That quirkyness saves them a lot of money. And the end result is really eye-catching. But if you actually hone in on the animation, there's not really much to it. It's all an illusion.

I hate most shows that are cheaply done, though. Not a lot of studios handle their budgets so well. CGI sucks, filtering sucks, dialogue stills over gorgeously painted, perfectly-lit desktop wallpapers with mouth flaps suck.

I'm just really into frame-by-frame animation. I dunno, there's not much that's more visually appealing than that fluidity that it tends to have. We used to see a lot more of it back in the days of 2D cel-shading. Animation in general was more interesting to look at back then. They didn't have all of these fancy digital tools to work with, so they actually had to get creative when it came to achieving certain effects and just generally making things look good. A lot of times, that involved several people sitting down and literally working it out frame-by-frame, so the means lent itself to a higher-quality result.

That doesn't happen so much anymore. Productions are rushed simply because studios now have the capacity to pull that off.

I assume that literally every anime I go into is going to be a piece of shit. And I'm usually right. But when I'm wrong, I tend to be really, REALLY wrong.

I think when you first start watching anime, it's all pretty interesting because its just so different from what most people are used to. Different methods of storytelling, completely different visual aesthetics, different dialogue patterns, and so on. But once you get accustomed to the different nuances of the medium, it gets really hard to not look past all of that and see a show with little to no substance under all of that anime sheen. I get the impression that many of the companies that are funding anime right now are not big risk-takers. They want to pump out stuff that will sell merchandise to their target demographics, not facilitate the creation of art that will move hearts and minds.

Personally, I stick it out for those occasional little nuggets of genuine art that slip through. It doesn't happen often, but it's still a pretty magical experience, even for my jaded heart. It doesn't even have to be really high-brow, it just has to try to be its own thing. That's something not too many production crews even dare to think about. Why do that when they can be passably mediocre and keep making enough money to make more passably mediocre shows?

OTOH, sometimes I look at seasonal charts and think to myself "Yeaaaah... think I'll skip this season."

I think a lot of animators and writers are probably as fed-up with it as we are. I swear I can sense it... ...even the people who make the shittiest shows must have some talent and worthwhile ideas floating around in there - these are people who chose to be artists for a living, probably with the intention of sharing their visions with the world. They are all dreamers... ...each and every one of them. They work for years to hone their craft of capturing glimpses of things as only they can see them. Their visions just aren't surfacing because of the way the industry as a whole is set up. You can tell when somebody on the crew was like "Ugh, I'm so over this bullshit. I'll just whatever it and be done with it."

I think that a lot of shows just aren't as good as they could be because they're never the shows the creators actually want to make.

Yeah, I generally steer clear of that whole scene for that very reason. For a while, anime culture in the west was this strange, sort of taboo scene - it was just kinda something for weirdos to sort of converge upon. That's changing now and more people with more of a healthy interest in it are surfacing. The attitude in the west is changing and even the east is taking notice. We may start seeing less stuff targeted at otakus in the future. A few shows with more western influences have been simulcast with full english dubs and did very well in viewership and sales. I think they are realizing that a lot of people in the west don't want those fan-service shows, but have a lot of money to throw at shows that are more in line with what they tend to look for in western media.

I also just generally tend to disagree with the fanbases' tastes and whims as a whole. I think a lot of them are just very childish. They've seen a lot of anime, but the range of their palates doesn't really reach past that. I call it anime blinders. They can't see why people would think their favorite show is terrible because they have no bearing on what is good outside of anime. I don't hate things because they're popular. I just think they legitimately aren't good, based on other things I've seen. There's a lot of really indefensibly trashy stuff out there. I really don't understand the otaku mindset at all.

The culture as a whole sort of fascinates me. It's like a petri dish of a wide spectrum of messed up people. But that is to say there are a lot of them I would rather not interact with. I think the same could be said of any fandom though. The most visible members of any fanbase tend to be the ones who take it to a level that's superficially very ugly and unhealthy.

Oh yes. It's the manliest, most subversively homoerotic thing I've ever seen outside of Jojo. I remember it was just right there in the open, but the show did everything it could to avoid acknowledging it. I was never sure if the double-entendres were really intentional. That's the funny thing about it. I'm willing to believe that he may really have been trying to spin an epic tale about the strength of platonic bonds that comrades in battle share and it just turned into a romance by accident.

It just came off as being really, really gay because at its core it was about two things: bonding and half-naked (sometimes full-naked) jacked dudes... ...that and really gory battles. Nothing wrong with that, it's just funny to me.

I was just waiting for Guts and Griffith to fuck the whole damned time. I wasn't sure if I was watching a yaoi or a shonen. Shounen ai is just weird to me. Who is that for? Who is it that finds this sort of bromance appealing?

Shame it never got finished, though. It was really epic.

Berserk is actually a seinen. Seinen is a category of anime and manga aimed at adult males. Other examples include Afro Samurai, Cowboy Bebop, The Big O, Fate/Zero, Ghost in the Shell, Legend of Galactic Heroes, Ergo Proxy, Vampire Hunter D, and Madoka Magica.

See I got a little bit of that, however Griffith admitted to fucking the one lord before he killed him. Im still mostly in shock at that ending, I have literally never seen anything like it at all, like not even close, i just sat there and thought wtf for 5 minutes. I just can't understand why they decided to end it with that scene.

The producer was banking on getting funding for a second season, but, after the final two episodes had already started production they told him that he wasn't getting a second season. He stuck to his guns on the ending.

I'm really surprised he committed to that, I really wish they had one more season to at least resolve some things, now I'll have to read manga if I want to know, something I really am not a fan of.

There's a movie series that, if I recall correctly, is set to cover the entire manga. So there is that.
