Upping flavour percentages but keeping ratio

Hi peeps...I have just started to DIY and am using exclusively FA flavourings. My initial plan is to follow other peoples recipes first, to see how flavours work together, rather than coming up with my own concoctions that would more than likely, be best employed in spraying vermin. I have made two already, which I can tell are great but are a little bit too subtle for me, a bit Like smelling the steak rather than eating it!, probably due to shot and uneducated taste buds! If I keep the ratios between flavours the same but increase the weight of each by 10% would I get a stronger flavour or will it all go pear shaped. I am using the Ejuice me up calculator. PG/VG and Nic volume would remain constant. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes, as long as you keep the ratios the same you can increase the overall percentage. For instance, sometimes I'll take a recipe with an overall percentage of 6% and make it at 8% - night and day difference. If you make a flavor base the it makes it extremely easy to do this with minimal math!

Ah..I was worried because I read somewhere that flavours can change when they hit higher percentages. So when you move from 6% to 8% overall the flavour profile doesn't change but just get more intense?

Yes, some flavors can change. But if you can hardly taste it at 6% you don't have much to lose by trying it at 8%, if that makes sense!

You may eventually develop better taste where you don't need as strong flavor as before, especially if you are used to vender juice.

You may be right about the vendor juice.I have a feeling this DIYing thing is going to be a very long learning curve! My first target is going to be a vanilla custard....though a three week wait to find out you've messed up is not appealing. Such a simple flavour but I only found one vendor (I won't mention who as I'm not sure it's allowed) who could pull it off and there is not much here on VU as people seem to prefer the more ambitious recipes.

I like custards until I started diy. After that I could not stand them. The reason is the flavor company. Many love that company and I use their stuff in small quantities with no issues. It is a learning curve. Hic's recipes were a big help. He is mainly fa but there are others that use tfa and others that are really good. Some mix different companies, as I do now. You will do fine.

This. I always increase percentage on any recipe less than about 12%. I just don't taste much below 15% or so, even after a good long steep. It's taken me MONTHS to figure that out. And many many mixes have gone down the drain. Big learning curve, especially since we all have different taste buds. I will say though, that day you get one that knocks your socks off?? Better than Christmas!!

Wow!....thanks for that...I thought I was the weird one. That helps enormously. First thing tomorrow, I'm going to make up some small batches of the same recipe and vary the percentages until I find my sweet spot. As long as I keep the ratios the same, I should be good to go :)

The one that kind of showed me where my tasted buds were was Hic's caramel eggnog. I did it at the recommended percentages and adjusted up from there. It may be better to start with an established recipe than trying to create something. After that you will know how the flavors work and how strong you need them. Diyordie Rhodonite I like a lot. it has a lot of flavor and I don't have to raise anything in that. You may find some recipes are strong, especially those that have FA peach, FA white peach or one or more of the FA cherries in them. This is just my opinion, of course. Dive in and have fun.

I have "Hics Vanilla nut coffee" ready to go again. It was my very first attempt. The wife said "I need make no other juices for her but this" as she's a chef, high praise indeed!

The other thing I look at and think about is what is the main goal of the recipie and make adjustments from there based on my taste preferences. For example, I can really taste things like mint or cinnamon and they take over recipies for me. I recently tried my first banana foster recipie and it called for a small amount of FA cinnamon (8 drops approximatly), however, I cut the amount by a third and I'm glad I did because I can still taste it but it's just right. If I had left it alone it would have been cinnamon bear banana foster.

Another way of saying this. What is the primary flavor and who is part of the supporting cast. Sometimes a slight change in just one area makes it an adv.

Another thing since nobody has said it. Sometimes a recipie has to be adjusted just because of the equipment you are using. There can be slight differences between dripping, subohm tanks, and all others.
That is an excellent observation......One may find that someone who is vaping by dripping into a sub-ohm RDA at high wattage may only require a 3% standalone flavor mix......and then one who is vaping in a small eGo Aspire-like tank may require a 15% mix ......and since taste is subjective.....well that does complicate things........I am blending at higher flavor %s and am finding the absolute importance of frothing my juice along with longer steep times.......The learning curve seems to continue.......but it beats the hell out of running down to the carry-out for a pack of smokes...... :)
