I've saved enough $$ in the past few months to buy 2 round trip tickets to Austria. And never missed the money lol

The pastries are delicious in Vienna, so is the schnitzel, but Prague's got the market cornered when it comes to ladies...
And just like the guy on a diet. I will be allowed to drool at the bakery window. But if I try to smell or taste the pastry. She'll have my head lol

10 hours 15 minutes to Munich, then another hour to Vienna

Hey, I'm heading to Vancouver in Sept. for the big 'Stargate' convention. I've never been there and I'm looking forward to it.

In Vienna, I think it's a law that you have to have 'kaffee mit schlag' (coffee with fresh whipped cream) and 'kuchen' (cake) every afternoon. :)

I'm already getting words over bringing Folgers with me lol I'm a lightweight when it comes to real coffee.

If you get a day, drive up to Squamish. And be sure you take a camera. It's not that far of a drive, but it could take you all day. Every mile/kilometer is a million dollar view. And you're sure to want pictures to remember it by.

Wish I could tell you about Vancouver. But I don't spend any time in the city, I just land and leave.

Folgers! FOLGERS!! Agghhhh!! You absolutely CANNOT drink Folgers in Vienna. I'm pretty sure it's illegal. (Well, maybe not...but it should be! :D)

I'm taking Coffee Mate also. Because the variant sold there, isn't the same. I'm going to die and go to hell for that too, I know. :cool:

They roast either a touch too far, or a touch too fast/hot.
They do massive industrial batches, so there may be an expediency component behind the reason.

Either way... it's a shame. They certainly have all the tools to do it right.
Of course, it barely matters to those who "enjoy" a highly flavored, bastardized within an inch of its' life cup of affectation.

Starbucks actually used to be a great coffee house But then they got bought out.

Starbucks actually used a silver mesh filtering system. It supposedly enhanced the flavor. They also sold them. I'm betting the youngsters don't miss it.

Not sure if this is what you're talking about...

Metal mesh coffee filters let the oils through. Does make a difference versus paper. Larger mesh like the ones in French presses let a little grit through as well. French press coffee is good, but yeah, the grit sucks if you don't let it sit first. From what I remember, you can ask Starbucks to make you FP coffee, but they charge you more.

Actually, the best coffee I've ever made consistently is with an AeroPress. Paper filter. Never used a French press again after I bought that thing, except for tea. The only two drawbacks to the AeroPress is 1) you can only make coffee for one/two people at a time (you can press three times with the same grounds; maybe 16 oz) and 2) no matter what Aerobie says, you can't make espresso with it. Really strong coffee at most, if you only press once with the grounds.

Moka pots are cool, but personally, I don't like messing with them.

Probably because of the pressure.

Damn it... I never tried pouring the coffee back into the the Aeropress to replunge. Just three times in a row with the same grounds. That last plunge is pretty weak, but all three combined turned it into regular (very smooth) coffee. Played around for a couple weeks to get it right.

The thing I don't get is the AeroPress SS mesh filter. I understand why people use it, but the stupid things are like $15 to $20. I'm also not a coffee snob. I've been drinking instant for over half a year. Caffeine and nicotine... the coffee and the DIY juice are nothing more than delivery devices.

It has something to do with the oils. Not sure what exactly.

Oils in the beans/grinds are able to pass through metal screens/mesh. Same with the super-fine espresso filters. The paper traps the oils, so there's less flavor. One of the reasons the French Press works so well is because the coffee is completely surrounded by the water, versus hot water simply dripping through them. Using that concept, you can seriously make coffee in a bowl and dump it through a clean cloth. Did that many times.

The cold brew iced coffee with white mocha, peppermint and milk is amazing... Even lady Sandra, who doesn't like coffee, enjoys mocha lattes at Starbucks...

Love my Aeropress, would never reuse the grounds though. I do however use an extra step and cup and pour what has dripped with the initial stir back in, then stir and set the plunger (for vacuum) and let it settle the grounds into a nice bed (15-20 seconds maybe). I want to press the water through the grounds, not simply filter them out ala the French Press.
A robust cup from half the beans. Why... I'm enjoying one now. :p

Regarding the "espresso" issue... Aerobie founder Alan Adler has gone round and round on CoffeeGeek on whether the ad text is misleading. It's not espresso... it's "espresso style".

Whatever the fuck that means.

He is however very forthcoming on the long, involved path he took creating the thing.
And he does love his TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meters... oh yes, he does. :p

I've read a bit on expresso. It seems a bit much for me, I really don't like the taste.

But what I read, steam is pushed through the grounds at high pressure. It turns to liquid again on the exit. Sounds like BS to me. But whatever floats your boat.

That being said, that may be why the guy refers to his, as Expresso like.
