Switching to weight from volume

So I just started mixing by weight after mixing by volume for the past couple of months. Something weird happened and I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong? My buddy wanted some juice and he vapes a different nic level than me, so I made a 30ml batch (15 for each of us) minus the nic. I then put the appropriate amount of nic in each bottle, then poured the juice in. The bottles didn't fill up all the way, so I had to top off with pg/vg to make sure I wasn't giving him something too strong. Anybody else experience this? I was very careful adding the weight for each liquid but came up a little short.

Are you using the correct weights or are you using 1g per ml for everything? This can make a big difference for VG ingredients. 1 gram of VG is less than 1 ml.

I used the manufacturer gravity weights (well I had that box checked anyway lol) and the vg/pg weights that are on the e-liquid recipe site.

Multiply your VG by 1.26 and your PG by 1.038 to get "true" values. That's where I messed up when I first started mixing by weight.

I tried to go ML to Grams being the same and I had your same results. I (still) use the 1:1 on flavoring but for the actual VG and PG I use the above numbers.

Here is an example assuming you are making 15ml of 50/50 PG/VG.

You need 7.5ml of each to be 50/50. If you are using the 1:1 ratio of ml to grams you would add 7.5 grams of each to make 15 grams which you are assuming is 15ml.

Here is what you actually added:
7.5 / 1.038 = 7.22 ml of PG.
7.5 / 1.26 = 5.96 ml of VG
Making your total mix 13.18 ml, almost 2 ml's short of the 15 you were targeting.

Note that most flavor ingredients are PG based. You could use a 1:1 ratio but as demonstrated above you aren't adding as much as you expected making your flavor % lower than expected.

I have trouble measuring some of my alcohol based flavorings.
Like 3 drops won't even register on my scale, (.00 resolution)
And some seem to be a mix of alcohol and PG.
So I've just been using volume measuring on some of these oddballs due to the unknown densities:confused:.

Lol that's exactly the site I'm using, which it why I was baffled. I screen shot too but usually other people's recipes ;) I have all mine in an excel spreadsheet for easy tweaks when I'm not online.

Let me help you out a bit, after I went back and read your entire post again. The bottle will never be 100% full ;)

My 32 ounce bottles will hold a liter. But it's so damn close it makes me twitch when I think about opening one of them filled that full. All of my 30ml Unicorn bottles, always have room left in them.

That's all I have unless you want to post a screen shot of a recipe and the breakdown done by the software.

hahaha I won't even go there. I have an entire thread dedicated to that topic.

But I will tell you that you can pick up a Hornady Reloading scale that goes .0000 resolution ;) It cost about $40. But the only thing you can do with it, is measure weights SMALLER than 100 grams. Perfect for small batches of flavoring.

Thanks guys!! Hopefully it was a fluke or I messed up somewhere. I'll be mixing this morning so hopefully I'll get better results ;) I don't really care if it's a bit short for my stuff, but I was mixing for a friend who doesn't like over 3% nic (I mix mine at 6%) and I didn't want to give him something too strong.

If I may humbly request, @tony09, here's two cents from a guy with modicum of experience and a fairly extensive collection of recipes and notes.

If you make just the slightest effort and take a moment to write out the recipe rather than posting picture of it, that allows others to copy and paste it into any other format if it is deemed it worthwhile.

Many of us would be ever so grateful if you grant this minor request instead of doing it the lazy way.

Hmm ... this flame-proof suit is a little tight in the crotch. :)

God I miss mine. Knocked them off my reloading bench a week before a match while loading up some 6.5s
