I thought about using square wire as the core for aliens as it may keep them flat a lot better with high gauge coresI guess it does, now that you mention it. It's a PITA to work with, though.
Good for Caterpillar Cores Also, May get the Outer Wrap completely flat using it...I thought about using square wire as the core for aliens as it may keep them flat a lot better with high gauge cores

Thats what the damn hammers forGood luck keeping it straight.
The primary benefit(besides not having to shell out more money for shaped wire) is when you draw it it comes out straight, you can also anneal it while you have tension on the drawn wire. I've used a draw plate with silver but should be about the same with these alloys i would imagineIm still thinking of getting a draw plate for some custom wire ideas. There are fine square, flat and half round plates out there reasonably priced. Half round would be great for framed staples and the flat for single core aliens

Im guessing you used the Square wire to make that Caterpillar? It looks as chrome and smooth as a 80's Chevy Bumper!
Very nice job man, very nice!Nope. That was regular 30g kanthal. Hammered. 28x38K multistrand cores.
You're on another level broFramed alien staple wire using square alien binding wrap

I can't get aliens to save my life!
Congrats.... I'm still working on getting a bit more comfortable with wrapping the claptons (only doing it for a few days now) maybe this weekend ill try the aliens.First try at 40g aliens, these things suck! I got enough for maybe one coil so it went about as expected.

I would definitely get more comfortable wrapping claptons and fused claptons before jumping straight in to aliens, its very frustrating at first and may put you off. I was building for a couple months before I gave aliens a shot. That first Clapton wrap is crucial too, if its not absolutely perfect your alien won't wrap right when you stretch it.Congrats.... Yeah that's why I'm gonna keep practicing first. I mean im getting the hang of it more and more each time. Wrapping up 2 more coils now and I'll have fused Claptons in all my attysI would definitely get more comfortable wrapping claptons and fused claptons before jumping straight in to aliens, its very frustrating at first and may put you off. I actually "cheat" on the stretch, I stretch it a little then stretch it with my fingers as I'm wrapping the alien if that makes sense.Took me forever and some money to find how much to stretch the wire...I actually bought some coils from Chef and with the extra legs I cut off I found that I wasnt stretching the clapton far enough out. Ive gotten much better since but I still rock Chef's Coils![]()
You da man!but I still rock Chef's Coils
That's an excellent technique, actually. Especially if you're limited on room to lay out your stretched wire. It also works wonders for 40g and above.I actually "cheat" on the stretch. I stretch it a little then stretch it with my fingers as I'm wrapping the alien if that makes sense.
It's really the only way for higher gauge wire, 36g can go either way but for 38 and up I have to stretch in my fingers. That's an excellent technique, actually. Especially if you're limited on room to lay out your stretched wire. It also works wonders for 40g and above.
It does look like an arched Clapton, but fuckin aye, still a great job on your first attempt in my opinion. And its probably still a great vape. What are the wire specs?View attachment 41908
My first alien guys.. Looks more like an arched clapton -___- So most def not tight enough on the wrap. Parallel with 22.
