Day 2 of the Fantastical Winter Garden Adventure is here!

Day 2: Wonderful water

Today’s theme is Wonderful Water!

Water makes up 71% of the earth’s surface and 60% of our bodies. It is an important and powerful thing! Water can heal communities or devastate them.

One movie that represents this duality beautifully is Frozen ❄️. Elsa’s powers can either heal or destroy depending on if she acts out of love or fear.

It’s the same way with your garden. You can either cultivate beautiful, loving energy for your seeds OR your fear can leave your seeds hanging out to dry!

Today, we will learn about how to use water to rinse and prepare your seeds, what to do if your tap water is hard, soft, or anything in between, and much more!

In today’s adventure, we will cover:

🪄 The magic of water

💧 The importance of watering your magical seed
🥼 An experiment by a Japanese scientist that will change the way you water
🧘 Having a positive mindset and blessing your water
❄️ Experimenting with winter gardening

>>> Watch now 💦 Wonderful Water!

After watching today’s episode on Wonderful Water - please share your takeaway from Day 2 here with fellow adventurers!

The adventure continues!

🌱 The Grow Your Own Vegetables Team 🌱

PS
- There have been a few questions about how your lentils should be stored between rinsing them. Leave them in the strainer, uncovered on your counter … you do not want to leave them in the water. See more about the rinsing instructions on Day 1 of the Fantastical Winter Garden notebook … click here to download and print.

It’s time for our 3rd and most magical day yet! 🪄

Today’s theme is Magical Micro-Heroes!

Just because you can’t see something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Like in Harry Potter when Hagrid tells Harry he is a wizard…Harry doesn’t see there is a whole world of magic going on right around him!

mail

…Just like you might not see the Magical Micro-Heroes of your garden! The bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that we can’t see keep your plants strong and healthy every day.

In today’s session, you’ll learn about…

🌱 5 beneficial magical micro-heroes
🌱 Microorganisms delivering nutrients to our plants
🌱 Bacteria and its key role
🌱 Nutrient cycling
🌱 Rhizophagy: the escape hatches for microbes

>>> Watch today’s adventure on Magical Micro-Heroes.

Here is what a few people had to say about Day 3:

“Mind blown on that fact about how many micro-heroes are in a handful of soil.” Sue G.

“I look forward to applying this to my indoor and outdoor plants” Lizzie D.

“Glad to know how sprouting works.” Terralee G.

Don’t forget to bring your magic wand to class!

🌱 The Grow Your Own Vegetables Team 🌱

PS
– After watching Day 3: Magical Micro-Heroes - please share your takeaway here.

PPS – There have been a few questions about how your lentils should be stored between rinsing them. More about this in your Fantastical Winter Garden notebook…click here to download and print.

How to Keep Poinsettias Alive After The Holidays

One year I had a holiday open house for clients and friends, over four consecutive nights in one week in December. I decorated with an insane number of poinsettia plants from the grocery store. They looked good well into January, and when they finally gave out, I pulled them out of their pots and pitched them over the back rail, thinking they would become compost in the rocks and dirt below. There were prickly pear cacti back there at the time, and those wilted poinsettia took root everywhere, in the cactus pads, in the dirt, in the rocks, and they grew and grew and grew. They get really leggy, but it was quite a spectacle, unexpected.

These were my table top trees that year. Unfortunately my pic cut off Santa's bi-plane landing on top of the taller one:

Big Beautiful Bill authorized 4.5 billion to regenerative farming. USDA is giving it only 700 million.

Action link:

After refusing to disburse 6.062 billion appropriated by Congress for family famers adopting regenerative agriculture practices and serving local markets, the USDA is earmarking 700 million for regenerative agriculture, when it has given 40 billion in bailouts to industrial agriculture this year.

The 700 million isn't new money, the USDA is taking it from the combined 4.515 billion annual budget appropriated by Congress for two regenerative agriculture programs, the Environmental Quality Incentives Program and the Conservation Stewardship Program.

Why isn't all of that money going to regenerative agriculture? If regenerative only gets 700 million, that means 3.815 billion (84 percent) goes to factory farms and pesticide-drenched genetically modified field crops.

Today I still had some peppers and tomatoes to pick.

These are sweet peppers.

Tomatoes and hot chilies

Just chilies of pretty much every variety I planted this year. This will be the end as it's getting cold enough that they are giving up.

What if I told you there was an easy and effective way to enjoy fresh, homegrown superfood salads in the next 14 days?

Even in the dead of winter.

What am I talking about? Microgreens!

Microgreens are the young versions of the super healthy and leafy veggies like broccoli, kale, spinach, peas, and so many more.

They also happen to be a miracle food of sorts because they’re easy, fast AND pack some of the highest nutritional punch in the world!

Personally, I use them in my tacos, wraps, salads, and sometimes I just eat a handful as a food supplement.

They’re easy to grow indoors or out, require very little space, can be ready to eat in 1-2 weeks, and are one of the most cost-effective ways to deliver tons of nutrition.

They’re also super easy to grow and perfect for beginners and seasoned gardeners alike.

That’s why I’m sharing this guide containing 6 Easy-To-Grow Microgreens to show you how easy it can be to grow your own.

Inside this simple-to-follow guide, you’ll discover:

🌱 The fastest way to get a plate full of microgreens

🌱 Why watering your microgreens is different than watering your garden

🌱 How to enjoy delicious peppery, lemony, sweet, and spicy flavors in your salads

🌱 The easy way to make sure your microgreens are safe to eat

🌱 How to save a TON of money on your seeds (*hint* DON’T buy them in packets!)

🌱 When to harvest your new microgreens for maximum flavor

Download your 6 Easy-to-Grow Microgreens Guide here

You can start growing these microgreens today, right at home.

Once you start, you’ll wonder why you haven’t been doing it for years!

Wishing you abundant health,

Jason Prall

P.S. Here’s the deal: microgreens grow super fast, from seed to plate in 7-14 days. They’re packed full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. And you can grow your own microgreens even if you think you have a brown thumb.

Plus, they are soooo much fresher and cheaper than what you'll find at the grocery store.

Download your guide and get started today!

With the old standby safety study retracted, it's more important now than ever that glyphosate be banned. I'll add that if your neighbor is using a glyphosate containing product, unless there is never any wind or air current, you are using it in your garden too.

Herbs and lettuce, cilantro, garlic, and onions left to right.

And a bunch of Bermuda grass that refuses to die...

There's light at the end of the tunnel for y'all in the cold. Surprisingly last weekend was when I had my first frost of the season. I'm resisting starting chilies and tomatoes because if I do we'll have frosts well into March when I want to get them outside.

We grow a wide variety of produce at Farm on Central (and I’m always trying weird, random stuff, like fishmint or Chinese artichokes.)

But there are two root crops we grow every year without fail, and they are some of the most rewarding crops on the farm.

They’re high-value, adaptable to small spaces, and increasingly in demand from customers who want fresh, locally grown roots—not dried powder shipped from halfway around the world. Most importantly, they carry a whole cartload of health benefits.

You’ve probably guessed already, but I’m talking about ginger and turmeric.

turmeric harvest #4

Ginger and turmeric have been used for generations for digestion, inflammation, and overall immune health. We grow them every year because we've seen how powerful they can be when they’re grown well, used regularly, and treated not as a cheat code or “cure all,” but as they are: a food with natural medicinal properties.

That’s why we’re hosting an upcoming webinar all about growing ginger and turmeric successfully—from sourcing seed, to planting, to harvest and storage. We’ll be sharing what’s worked for us, what didn’t, and how you can decide if these crops make sense for your location. We’ll talk about growing these crops in tunnels on a commercial scale, but we’ll also share cultivation tips for home gardeners just looking to keep a few plants in containers or in their garden. So whether you are planning on growing one plant or hundreds, come ready to take notes and ask questions.

Hi Jimi,

Have you ever noticed how some people seem to actually enjoy their garden… while others feel overwhelmed, behind, or unsure what to do next?

It’s not because they have more space, better soil, or years of experience.

More often, it’s because they’re gardening in a way that fits their life, climate, and energy — and that’s what brings the joy back.

That’s exactly why we’re hosting a free 8-day online event this February.

  • Feel more confident, capable, and excited about your garden again

And yes — joy really does follow when gardening starts to feel clear and doable.

Think about the simple happiness of:

In the last 10 years, grocery prices have steadily increased, and it can feel like the cost of healthy, fresh food keeps climbing.

And while prices may fluctuate in the short term, do you think organic food will be more or less expensive in the next 10 years?

I think the answer is pretty clear.

Truth is, there has never been a better time to start growing your own food, so you can save money, enjoy fresh produce, and always know exactly what’s on your plate.

You’ll learn step-by-step how to grow the freshest, most nutrient-rich foods right at home and experience the JOY of gardening at the same time.

Save your seat for the Joyful Gardener series now.

Here’s why growing your own food is so important:

  • Know exactly where your food comes from and how it was grown
  • Save money on groceries by having food readily available
  • Have food to eat no matter what happens in the world
  • Share your abundant harvest with your friends and family
  • Reduce your stress and enjoy the simple JOY of gardening
This event is perfect whether you’re just starting your first garden, want to double your harvest, or are anywhere in between.

Hi Jimi,

Are you a Garden Activist?
A Garden Ninja?
Or maybe a Garden Chef? 👩‍🌾

🌿 If you’re thinking, “What are you talking about?” — you’re not alone 🙂

Here’s the thing most gardeners don’t realize:

Gardening isn’t just about the plants you grow.

At its roots (pun intended 🙄), it’s about YOU — your goals, your values, and what you actually want from your garden this season.

That’s why we created the Your First Step to Grow ORGANIC Vegetables Guide.

This simple, insightful guide helps you:
  • Identify your garden personality
  • Get clear on what to focus on right now
  • Avoid overwhelm from trying to do “all the things”
  • Create a garden that fits your life, space, and energy
Joyful Gardener Docuseries Feb 10-17

Why does this matter so much?

Because even experienced gardeners revisit this step every season.

Your goals, time, and priorities change — and your garden should change with you.

When your garden goals align with your values, everything feels clearer. And suddenly, growing food feels lighter, more focused… and more enjoyable.

🌱 “The tips and explanations given in the Joyful Gardener will definitely save time and be rewarding for the harvest. I had not heard anyone explain these concepts as understandably as Stacey.” - Ken A.

Bonus: When you download the guide, you’ll also receive an invitation to join us for the Joyful Gardener Docuseries (February 10–17).

This 8-day online experience builds on the guide and helps you:
  • Overcome common garden obstacles
  • Grow with confidence in your local conditions
  • Maintain the joy of gardening — not just the results

>>> Get the Guide + Join the Joyful Gardener Docuseries

Here’s to clarity, confidence, and a garden that truly supports you 🌿

Grow More by Working With the Sun
Before seeds go in the ground, sunlight is one of the most important — and often overlooked — pieces of garden planning. This week, we’re revisiting a favorite blog that helps you understand how light moves through your garden and how to use it to grow stronger, more productive plants (even if your space isn’t perfect).

What Successful Gardens Have in Common

Some gardens thrive — not because the gardener has years of experience, but because they understand a few simple fundamentals that plants need to grow well.

Whether you’re just thinking about starting a garden, planting your first season, coming back after a frustrating year, or have several years of experience, this is a great place to begin.

We’ve gathered the essential building blocks of successful gardening into a free, short-form video series designed to help you:
  • Understand what plants truly need to thrive
  • Feel confident starting (or restarting) a garden
  • Work with your climate and space — no matter the size
  • Grow food in a way that feels doable and joyful

It’s supportive, practical, and made for real life — no pressure, no perfection required.
The Joyful Gardener

The Joyful Gardener Docuseries reveals what makes gardens thrive — no matter your experience, garden size, or climate.

🎥 What it is: A breakthrough 8-part docuseries packed with practical, inspiring lessons on climate, soil, compost, planting, irrigation, harvest techniques, pests, and more — all designed to help you grow nutrient-rich vegetables and herbs at home.

🧑‍🌾 Who it’s for: Beginners, seasoned growers, and anyone ready to grow with more confidence and joy.

✅ Why it matters: You’ll learn the real building blocks of a successful garden — including how to partner with nature instead of fighting it — so your garden works smarter (not harder).

Get ready to watch the episodes and elevate your gardening game!

Don’t throw away your peels.
Nature rarely gives us anything without purpose. And yet, most of us discard fruit and vegetable peels without a second thought. What if those peels were some of the most nutrient-dense, healing parts of the plant?
That’s exactly what this new guide, The 20 Healthiest Fruit And Vegetable Peels (Stop Throwing These Incredibly Good-For-You Peels Away!), reveals.
Peels aren’t scraps. They’re concentrated packets of fiber, antioxidants, and plant compounds that support digestion, reduce inflammation, and boost overall wellness.
Inside the guide, you’ll discover:
  • Which peels support gut health, detoxification, and immune balance
  • How specific peels help fight oxidative stress and inflammation
  • Ways to incorporate peels safely to maximize nutrient absorption
  • The hidden value of produce you’ve likely been tossing
When we start seeing every part of a plant as purposeful, our approach to nutrition transforms. Your peels are a daily dose of nature’s wellness, and I hope the guide helps you to start incorporating them into your life.
So thankful that you're making an investment in your health, your life and yourself.
Because health means everything,

Hi Jimi,

Have you wanted to learn how to grow your own ginger or turmeric?

🪑 Save Your Seat

These two bizarre crops will spice up your garden (literally) like nothing else.

Maybe you’re thinking, “What??? I can grow these in my backyard!”

You bet you can!

Now, if you’ve ever used ginger in your cooking or taken turmeric supplements then you know just how powerful these two roots are. They’re full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, and have traditionally been used to help everything from digestive issues (ginger) to joint pain (turmeric).

🐝 Protecting Bees, NOT Harming Them

If you’ve ever lit a “normal” candle and felt that synthetic fragrance hit your throat or head, you already understand the problem. Most candles are loaded with mystery scents and additives that have no business being in your air (and then your lungs and bloodstream).
Once you learn what you’re actually breathing, you can’t unknow it, and you definitely can’t un-smell that fake, perfumey haze.
I’m real-life good friends with the the founder and the owner at Bee Lucia. I’ve toured their facility, and can tell you they’re the real deal: kind, meticulous humans who genuinely care about bee health and doing this work the right way.
I also know many ECL readers are protective of bees and wary of anything that feels extractive. I’m the same way, which is why I asked hard questions. Ethical, conscious hive stewardship can be a net positive for colonies when it’s done with care and competence: supporting resilient hives, keeping stress low, and managing real-world threats like mites in a responsible way. Backing companies that prioritize hive health helps reinforce the kind of bee management that protects colonies rather than depleting them.
Why these are virtually the only candles we allow in our house:
  • They’re made with pure beeswax, organic coconut oil, and essential oils, not synthetic fragrance clouds.
  • They smell strong enough to actually fill a room, without the toxic “candle hangover.”
  • They burn clean and feel aligned with a home that’s trying to reduce chemical load.
