Captain America: Civil War is loosely based on the 2006 seven-issue comic Civil War, by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. Yet while the central storyline that pits Iron Man against Cap remains the same, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have taken liberties with pretty much everything else, crafting a different inciting incident, having Zemo pull the strings, introducing new characters and dropping old ones to fit the MCU, and giving Spider-Man a VERY different character arc.
