Dull white or gray coating of titanium dioxide develops. It's not dangerous in itself, but the dull white coating has the potential to come (dust) off the wire and get inhaled as nano particulate. The nano particulate is not good for you cause it is small enough to make it all the way to your brain and cause general problems.

Titanium dioxide is fairly commonly used as whitener. You might find it in things like toothpaste.
