Ok I need some opinions
For the last6 months I have started losin weight again,
I eat like a horse all day long and include all of carbs within my diet that I can have, even went off my regular diet and included a big Salmon dinner every other week for the fats in it.
I am down 126 and that's a little thin for a man 5' 9" tall, every couple weeks I lose a few pounds and no matter how much I eat I can not gain an ounce,
Well Jean says I need to go to doctor but I don't like/trust/care for doctors, they all all after one thing $.
Do you think she's right?
Thank you
Jimi, when I add up all the items you listed there, that's concerning that you can't put on weight.
3 cups oatmeal @ 190 cal. per cup = 570
Dates, one cup divided over the three servings oatmeal? = 415 cal.
Two huge handfuls walnuts = a cup? = 700
Two apples in your day @ 95 cal. each = 190
Two oranges @ 70 cal. each = 140
Two pears @ 100 cal. each = 200
Three slices sourdough bread plus the vegan butter = approx 220 cal x 3 = 660 (1/2 tablespoon vegan butter incl. per slice)
A pound of peanuts in your day, shelled? If shelled, 2575 cal. If in the shell and you pop them out to eat, far fewer calories in the pound bag.
3 large potatoes @ 110 cal. each x 3 = 330
Huge bowl broccoli, I've often said those calories just don't count (the nutrients count), but the vegan butter, 2 tablespoons = 180 cal (90 x 2)
Salmon - 8 oz? = 320 cal.
Stuffed mushrooms - mushroom calories negligible, but I'm guessing stuffed with a wild rice mixture or a vegan cheese or something, hard to calculate, so I'll estimate 350 calories the serving.
Total estimate: 6630 calories
Do you really eat that way every day? Or is it twice a week you have the time and the rest of the days you're so busy you have to remember to eat?
You were talking about being unable to gain weight in February of last year, 2023, in my diet thread. You were down to 132. My questions are still these: I can tell your appetite is good, but is your digestion good, and overall are you feeling well (accounting for the stress you're under with Jean's medical situation)?
Do you still exercise two hours in the morning? That will burn a lot of the calories you're consuming. I would never tell anybody to stop exercising. It's more important than diet, but maybe replacing some of your hard exercise with gentle yoga, stretching, balance exercises, could be an option for both the physical effects and the calming of your stress. Only you can say, but I observe your routine of two hours morning exercise, taking care of Jean, cooking for both of you, cleaning the house, shopping, hauling, Jean's medical appointments, your routine appointments for blood work. How much stress can affect weight I don't really know. Stress tends to make me eat more and get a little out of control at the end of the day, but some people will worry themselves skinny, if that makes sense.
Finally, can you see a dietitian before you seek out some MD who has had maybe two hours training in nutrition in med school if any at all.
I don't want to veer dangerously into the territory of trying to be your doctor, but I do come by my granny healer skills honestly. It's very concerning if you really are eating that way every day yet losing weight. It seems you're just not getting nourished by your food. What you describe has plenty of protein, fats and carbs. All the fruits and veg are giving you good vitamins and minerals. It wouldn't be an insult, the way you work outdoors for several months of the year, digging in the dirt, with wild critters all around, to wonder if you've contracted a parasite.
I'm glad you found a way to enjoy some good bread though. Sourdough is a fermented food, with the resulting benefits of the ferment.
I hope you'll keep us posted.
