Action Comics #50 has the misfortune of being the final chapter of Greg Pak and Aaron Kuder's run on the series while also serving as the third-to-last chapter of the "Savage Dawn" crossover. That speaks to the unfortunate state of the Superman franchise as much as anything. Great creative teams are being hamstrung by a nonstop series of crossovers. With that in mind, it's impressive just how well this issue is able to close the book on Pak and Kuder's work.

Pak and Kuder's work has largely stood out for two reasons. One, they've focused a great deal on Supes' supporting cast and the important role people like Lana Lang and John Henry Irons play in his life. Two, they're captured the joy and optimism that are an indelible part of Superman in a time when too many stories focus on violent spectacle and cynicism. Both of these qualities are in abundance in this issue as Clark makes his final stand against Vandal Savage. Pak and Kuder reinforce the importance of his allies in this conflict and call back to the many adventures they've shared over the past couple years in a way that does help this issue feel like a natural conclusion to their work.
