My build last night had less wraps and was awesome in every way - especially flavor. Today's build with more wraps has very little flavor and is not nearly as enjoyable. Wicking is basically the same as last night. So I don't understand how resistance doesn't matter?
Last night's coil was getting hotter and more fully vaporizing the juice, giving you more flavor. Today's coil is bigger and running cooler at roughly the same input power, so it vaporizing juice just enough to give tasteless clouds.

I suggest recreating the best coil from last night, but this time put a tiny bit of space between the wraps. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes not. Depends on the juice and your tastes really. Make a good coil and try to make it better. Know what I mean?

You need to know how the amp limit on your batteries, mod and that depends on the coils.
Lower ohm = more amp.
The lower the ohm, the higher the watts.
Do a duckduckgo search for ohms law, vape calculator, coil calculator.
One or the other, and you will find out every thing you need to know :)
Its not as hard as it seems.
If you are using a mec mod, dont. Or at least learn everything before you do.
If there is any thing in peticular you need to know, just ask :)

I use Ti in watts, and its nice, but i prefer ss...
Thank you so much, Klove! :)

Thanks gakudzu! I actually just did a build with my Clapton coil - 4 wraps 2.5 mm and it ohms at .65 steady. Great vape and great flavor! Another success!

Next time I will try it with spaces between the wraps as you suggested. :)

You got a serious case of newcoilitis. :teehee:

I'm more of a "find one good coil and vape it to death" kinda guy. Nothing wrong with either method, as long as you're having fun, learning, and not smoking.

I'm mostly doing it to practice and learn. Vaping and longevity are secondary currently. ;)

I forgot to take a picture before wicking but you can kind of see the build below. Maybe not pretty but it's working great at 30W. Oh and I cut off a lot of the wick from what you see below. I did the pancake method from RiPTrippers.

Edit: 30W not 50W.

Next build will be my Kanthal, 24 GA 2.0mm 4 wraps 1.0mm spacing should come out to 0.272 ohms.

Once this coil is done, of course. ;)

How long should a wick last with moderate vaping? How often should I be changing them?

Around a week minimum. Maybe 2-3 weeks if you don't vape heavy

Thanks! :) So far I think that rebuilding straight whomps using factory coils (and it's more fun, too). Hopefully I will continue to feel the same way over time. :bliss:

Fully agreed. It's cheaper, more fun, and you can make coils that kick the ass out of premade ones.

I decided to use up the factory coils on my Smok Spirals tank before trying out the included RBA. My 0.6 ohm coil lasted from last Wednesday until just now, the longest I've ever gotten a factory coil to last. I just installed the 0.3 ohm coil. Hopefully it will be at least as enjoyable as the 0.6!

Re-wick and dry-burn when it stops tasting good -- every juice will be different, and even the same juice, may be different according to the wattage you use. If the wick is brown, is probably a good sign to change it, but really the taste is the best guide.

@gakudzu has your wire arrived yet? make sure to post up once you've got something! :)
It arrived...about 5 years too late for my eyesight, lol. Seriously, I can barely see 36g. Looks thinner than a strand of my wife's hair!

I gave it a shot, though. This is supposed to be a 3/26g core w/36g wrap. The first inch stayed flat, then the cores twisted and it all went south from there.

20170114_181015.jpg

I think new glasses, and a bigass magnifying glass may be my next vape order, lol. I couldn't even see how bad it truly was until I blew up the pic.

That's better than I can do! Don't be discouraged - keep at it if it's your thing. I'm trying to be patient with my own learning of building/rebuilding and trying more to enjoy it than to be the best at it.

I should add to this -- I realized that when folks are kinda new to vaping, this isn't really much of an answer -- when I first started, the juice I used was so "clean," one of the little pre-made/pre-wicked Kanger coils I used in my T3S's could last 2 or 3 weeks. When I got into sweet vapes, (by which time I was already a coil builder), a wick lasted me about a week, TOPS. But coils could still last a month or more -- in fact I had a couple that lasted for 3 months. But when I started making the strawberry & cream that I've vaped for the last 2 yrs, suddenly I had to re-wick and dry-burn every other day, and that takes a toll on the coil, so it has to be replaced about every couple weeks or so. Since I've slightly decreased my flavoring percentages, and drastically reduced the amount of sweetener, now I can get away with re-wick/dry-burn about twice a week, or even once a week if I'm not vaping a lot, and a coil lasts about a month.

It's really a matter of the juice, as I said at first, but there can be a HUGE variation between clean-vaping juices, and gunk-monsters like mine. The sweeter they are, the rougher they are on both wicks and coils.

It's my first attempt at anything on this level. I'll definitely try again since I have a few hundred feet of wire now. That was freehand with my beater drill. I'll dig my other drill and some good swivels out the basement later, clean my glasses, and take another swing at it.

Amazing the difference clean glasses, 3x brighter lighting, and a smoother drill make. Dropping back to 2 cores helped, too.

So here they are:
2x 26g kanthol A1 cores w/36g 316L SS wrap.
5 wraps @2.5 i.d.
0.174 ohms total

Freshly wrapped

Damn shame the pic doesn't show the pretty colors. I'll mount them in the Supreme, and take more pics tomorrow in the sunlight.

Thank you for the encouragement, @EMusic.
And thanks to all the builders I've been stalking on VU.

For me that method worked great. Used 2 identical rta to experiment.
I had a good build. Then added and subtracted wraps. Went up and down in guage. Added space between each wrap. That's how I learned how everything affected the vape and what I like. Did over 20 builds. Fun fun fun!

The wire being black is ok, but change the cotton. Now you need a vid on cleaning the wire, lol. Basically, you just pull out the cotton, heat the coil to glowing, and run water over the coil, BUT JUST THE COIL. Don't get the mod wet, obviously. Repeat. Dry fire, remove hot spots in the wire by squeezing or strumming while red, BUT NOT WHILE FIRING. Let cool, rewick, prime, and refill. It's a bit much in the beginning, I know, but after a few times it gets easier.

And sorry for the CAPS. Not yelling, just emphasizing.

Im fairly new to building but I was always under the impression that you could use the ceramic tweezers to adjust your coils while firing. Right? Is there something else I should know, should you not touch your coils while firing regardless?

You can use ceramic while firing, yes. I just don't have any yet, and didn't know what the OP was using.

If you do hold the coil compressed while it's firing, with ceramic tweezers, that coil is permanently compressed, it's like fused. I didn't care for that, but others might like it.

Perfect for contact coils lol. If that's your thing. Outside of that it's good to strum the coils with the tweezers while pulsing to remove hot spots

Just a Fused Clapton, I think. I can't remember all the names for these things. LOL
2 thicker wires inside with a small wire wrapped out them is indeed a fused clapton but yeah so many names for coils lol

I don't care for the additional heat they make, with my 29ga; I just try to wrap it as closely together as I can, and leave it like that, just natural -- close, but not touching. That way I can take a nice slow hit and not burn up the wick. :)

Depends on the build and deck really on whether is space mine or not. Hard to beat the flavor of these though

I'm so glad that I got my Coil Master kit. I couldn't have done these builds without it, and I'm now completely stoked on building. My build on my Big Baby Beast tonight was a hit and that is making me even more excited about my future building/rebuilding. Now that I'm satisfied with my current builds, all to do now is sit back and vape and see how long these builds last.

Thanks again for everybody's help! I couldn't have done it without you.

@gakudzu is that a Silver Alien Mod? I see the top is silver/aluminum. My black and red is getting pretty nicked up. My two buttons are the worst so I used nail polish remover to take the paint off. Came off so easy. Was thinking of doing the entire mod

The paint came off, lol. I polished it a little with a buffer wheel on my dremel. Couldn't decide what to do with it, so I just put it in a silicone sleeve.
