All the safety info I know is on Li-Po, same precautions, right?

Hi people, hope your doing OK.

I've realised when I was into RC helis, they used, and still do use, very, very large Lithium POLYMER, not ION, batteries.

When charging, we could never leave them alone, was recommended to charge them in a fireproof bag or box, seems to be the same as Li-on.

Why do we use Li-ons instead of Lipo batteries? As I think people may feel safer if they know its the same type of battery in your phone( even though they are still very similar to Li-ons). DO Li-ons offer better capacity/discharge?

Thanks, Conan.

Just done some reading, Lipos offer Less internal resistance for faster discharging and higher amperages, at up to 65C continuously, or 135C in bursts!

Has less self aging, and is less explosive. Why don't we use them?

Ok I have been watching some safety videos, and sure, if mishandled(Extremely) they can vent and stuff, but when treated correctly they appear quite safe??

Generally, Li-Ion batteries are more stable and offer more safety. I can put a pair on the rack before I go to bed then use them in the morning without having to put them in a fire-proof bag or something like that. I'm not too worried about them blowing up while charging. Additionally, IMR chemistry batteries don't even explode or shoot fire when they vent. They just leak hot electrolytes. Still wreak your mod, but they don't explode or shoot fire. Now, ICRs will explode and/or shoot fire all over you, but they don't have a high enough C rating to be used for vaping anyway.

Some lipo packs are protected now - thermally and voltage. You have to check specs. Also, the chargers have come a long way to monitor eack cell during the charge cycle and will let you know if there is a bad cell in a mutlt-cell pack (balance charging). Some of those fires were caused by impatience. Short flight times and wanting to fly again leading to peeps going beyond recommended charge rates (with no cooling down) since those chargers are flexible in that regard.

There are a couple of regulated mods using LiPo batteries now, I believe. One of them even goes to 260w. Maybe the main reason for the majority of mods using IMR is a form factor issue. Not sure, but definitely worth checking out.
