She was diagnosed with Stage IIB (T2, N1, M0) Pancreatic Cancer last June, and had a Distal Pancreatectomy w/ Splenectomy done at John Hopkins last July. Of the 38 lymph node removed, they found one with the cancer. Problem is, this statement :( :

The overall 5-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is 5.1% (all stages). For patients with pancreatic cancer that has spread to other organs (metastasized) the reported survival rate is 1.8%. this increases to 8.2% for patients with regional disease and to 20.0% for patients with localized disease. http://www.path.jhu.edu/pc/DiagStaging.php?area=di

Pancreatic cancer is one of the rarest, but has the highest mortality rate.

Five-year survival rates approach 20%-25% if the cancers are surgically removed while they are still small and have not spread to the lymph nodes (localized). She had at least one lymph node involved, so her chances are cut in half. Thats what makes this latest testing result such good news :) She is doing Folfirinox which is a cocktail of 4 or 5 (depending) of the strongest chemos every 2 weeks and it finally seems to be working. She is not out of the woods by any means yet, but at least we can now see the daylight :)

Thanks man!

Thank you for the story, J. Now I get just how great this news is! :) I can't be the only latecomer around here who didn't know, and the more people sharing the hope the better. Numbers be damned, except the 0 after the M. Her story is special and so very optimistic indeed. Continued best wishes and healthful vibes through the chemo and recuperation. :)

Love this. Was really surprised by Ethan this morning... he has a golden retriever that he has never really engaged with. She waits for him to get home from school every day and sees him off every morning.

This morning he finally reached out and rubbed her on the head and nose. Was a great start to the morning.

To bad I have to follow it up by doing my taxes :(
Thats great about Ethan finely opening up..

Agree about having to do taxes.. :(

My uncle passed away from pancreatic cancer. He was diagnosed about the same time as Patrick Swayze and passed short after Swayze. Fortunately he had been saving a rainy day fund for retirement and was able to afford some sort of special chemo treatments after insurance cut him off right up until the hospital and doctors finally told him that they wouldn't provide treatment any longer because it was not going to help and put him on the hospice list.

It is a devastating cancer and I'm very glad to hear such great news for you and your wife!
Thanks!

Sorry to hear your Uncle went through this. It really is a fast growing, hard hitting cancer :( What really sucks is, from the time you might think something is wrong, to the time they diagnosis it, it could already be too late. This stuff grows sooo fast it aint funny at all. You could have a PET scan come clean, and 6 mouths later have a tumor so big they cant operate on it. In fact, from the time they first saw it on a CT and biopsied it, to the time she had the surgery a month later, it had went from less than 2cm to 3.5cm. In one month! The only reason they found it was that she had pancreatitis and the GI thought she might have some duct blocked so ordered a CT.

Has anyone ordered (and received) anything from Fasttech since the end of January? I've had 2 packages sitting in China (supposedly processed) since the first week in February. No movement at all. I thought being ahead of the New Year, they would have at least left China but it doesn't look like it. Nothing I need right away, just wondering if anyone has heard anything.
I had 2 orders placed on the 24th of Jan.. One shipped the 28th and made it here, the other shipped the 6th and is still stuck in China.

Shit, had to walk half mile up the hill to the house to get home from the VA. Needed ski poles , my cane was worthless. To top it off.. labs were shitty. Kidney function down to 26, ah hell. great day to tell the world to KMA.
At least you can still climb that hill ;) Welcome home :)

Anything to do about that kidney function? Less beer, more water? :D

Nothing they can do, trying to get on the list for a new one.... dialysis soon, at this rate 2 or 3 months away. You know how it is. How's your son do'n ?
New one through the VA? Can you get on that new Veterans Choice plan? I got my card, and live more than 40 miles away from the nearest VA Clinic (and 100 from the Hospital), but they decided that I in fact cant use the card . Trying to appeal now.

Glad his numbers are getting better.... hey I've had over 16 years, sure can't complain. Just hate putting Mel through this again. Thanks for the prayers, I've had so many answered, feel guilty asking for more.
Never feel guilty, my friend.. I will pray and thank Him for your healing.
