Amy – the documentary that charts the meteoric rise and similarly rapid fall of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse – is a film that straddles multiple genres. It starts out as the entertaining account of a charismatic singer breaking into the music industry. When she hits the big time there are elements of comedy and romance as Amy wisecracks her way through interviews and finds love in all the wrong places. But then proceedings turn dark, the dream transforming into a nightmare as alcohol and drugs take hold. And as the end nears, and Winehouse’s death at the age of 27 approaches, the horror turns into tragedy that breaks the heart.
