The Japanese animated film Your Name. has been the biggest hit of the year in that country, and is currently their fifth highest-grossing film of all time. It’s on the shortlist for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and it’s the first non-Hayao Miyazaki anime film to make over $100 million (￥10 billion) in Japan. Directed by Makoto Shinkai, it’s the story of a young girl named Mitsuha in a small town who is frustrated with her simple life. Her father, the mayor, is mostly absent and she’s constantly teased at school. She wishes that, in her next life, she could come back as a handsome boy who lives in Tokyo. Taki, a handsome boy in Tokyo finds himself switching bodies with Mitsuha a few days a week after a comet is seen in the sky. In Taki’s body, Mitsuha helps him on a date with a girl he likes. He helps her find confidence at school. Though they can’t speak, they leave each other messages, on their bodies, in notebooks and in a phone diary. Through this, they learn about each other’s lives and find themselves falling in love. The problem? They’re not just separated by location. They’re separated by time, and one of their timelines is about to end in disaster.
