Got mine in today, ran over to my old Magma clone and whipped out a .35 ohm coil from 22 gauge kanthal - single coil is how I roll on the Magma.
Packaging is identical to what you see on the website, with a generous amount of material in a sealed baggie. There was a letter of thanks in the package as well, with hand written notes of thanks and some randomness thrown in for good measure - I appreciate vendors taking a little extra time to do that sort of stuff unprovoked, nice touch.
Now, anyone familiar with the Magma knows that it's got a super-deep juice well. I figured this would be the best "test" to see how the wicking not only holds the juice, but how well it sucks it up from a well below it and feeds it into the coil.
The fibers are a little mish-mashed in the package, but nothing I couldn't straighten out with some finger work; give 'er the ol' stroke and roll. Once I got a nice, even wick, I threaded it through, trimmed off the ends and stuck the new ends down to barely touch the bottom of the well.
I'll say this: it doesn't act like cotton at first. The juice beaded and sat on top of the wicking without really getting sucked into it very quickly. A little sense of foreboding hit the back of my head, but I trucked on - this is a different type of material, so I've got to give it the benefit of the doubt. Slowly it would seep into it, the juice at the bottom of the wick did a quick job of absorbing into the ends. With slightly more time than with cotton, I got the wick saturated to a comfortable point. That's when I figured out the trick: I pulsed the coil. Everything sitting on and around it was fed quickly in. Rinse and repeat, saturate - pulse, saturate - pulse, three or so did it right.
And the vape that comes off this is righteous. I dig it. Clean, smooth tasting, there's a "tell" when the wick starts running on the dry side and it's easy to pick out, not at all unpleasant, and doesn't smell like a dorm hallway at close-to half-past four in the afternoon (a sneaking assumption I had from the get go, and very relieved that wasn't the case).
So I finished up with flavor one, pulled the wick and tossed it, cleaned the dripper and inserted a new, clean wick. Got it a bit wet, got it wet on the tips, gave a pulse and did "the trick," it took about half the time as the first. Beautiful vape. Beautiful taste, no added taste or anything, no nuance - just clean flavor and thick vape.
Final verdict time, after having used it exclusively for the better part of the afternoon til the writing of this mini-review. Did I say I dig the elfwick? I dig elfwick. A lot. It's hungry stuff, eagerly pulling any and all juice once the flow is started. It takes a smidge more attention to get the fibers to cooperate right out of the bag. It takes a little more attention than cotton to get it saturated, but taking the time is worth it in the end.
I'll say that it's not night-and-day better than cotton - but then I don't find huge differences between 100% Organic Name Brand Premium Japanese Cotton and CVS Brand Cotton Balls straight from the bag, either. It's different, but I'd personally set it on the shelf just above cotton. I really like this stuff, and judging from the two wicks I've made so far, versus how much comes in a bag, it's going to go quite the distance. I'll be buying a couple more bags to stock up. I'm also excited to get this stuff in my Crius and Lemo 2 - I'm sure that it'll work wonderfully.
TL;DR - Picked one up because I'm a sucker for gimmicks, and curiosity doesn't play well with me. I'm glad I did - I like it, good stuff. Clean vape, hungry fibers that love juice, great stuff and worth the price. Doesn't smell bad or funky, good and clean. Burley gives two thumbs up, then hooks them back on his belt loops.
