Earlier in February, it was reported iPhones repaired by anyone but Apple were being bricked by the company's iOS 9 update. Today, the company has supplied not only a fix, but an apology as well. The updated version of iOS 9.2.1 will restore phones previously rendered useless by Error 53.
Apple issued a statement to TechCrunch, noting the error was caused by a factory testing measure that was "designed to check whether Touch ID works properly before the device leaves the facility." The company went on to apologize for the inconvenience, and urged customers who paid for "an out-of-warranty replacement of their device based on this issue" to reach out to AppleCare for a reimbursement.
