Two months after the massive launch of Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead, Netflix is preparing to reenter its zombie-infested world with the prequel film Army of Thieves. During the production's panel at Comic-Con at Home 2021, Army of the Dead breakout star Matthias Schweighöfer unveiled the first teaser for his upcoming prequel, which is set to release this fall.

The teaser features almost no zombies apart from a brief glimpse seen in a news broadcast. The film will feature a heist-heavy narrative set in Europe, away from the undead uprising in the United States. The teaser features Schweighöfer, reprising his Army of the Dead role as the safecracker Dieter, as his character is recruited by Gwendolyn (Fast and Furious star Nathalie Emmanuel) to pull off a series of heists across Europe.

Witness the army before the dead.

Moderated by Preston Elliot and Steve Morrison, the panel included producers Zack and Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller, as well as stars Schweighöfer and Emmanuel. Schweighöfer also served as director on the film. The group discussed how the project came together during the making of Army of the Dead.

"We liked the idea that it was set at a time when zombies existed in the world, but it’s not a zombie film," Deborah Snyder explained. "This is more of a romantic comedy heist film than anything else, [but it] happens to live in this world where zombies are in the United States. Banking systems [have] some instability, so it’s having people move money around.”

Netflix shared a new poster for Army of Thieves on Twitter after the panel's conclusion.

The panel also announced Army of The Dead: Viva Las Vengeance, a VR experience that will tour across several major cities. Viva Las Vengeance will allow players to immerse themselves as members of a rescue team searching for survivors in a zombie-ridden Las Vegas. Tickets are currently up for purchase on the event's website, with available dates as soon as this Thursday, July 29, in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas. The website also promises that the experience will come to other major cities across the United States and Europe.

In our Army of the Dead review, IGN gave the film a 6, saying that it "ends up bogged down by its own self-importance" while highlighting Schweighöfer's performance, saying that "any time (Omari Hardwick's) Vanderhoe and safecracker Dieter are together, hilarity ensues."
