We're on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Marvel security is hovering nearby closer than usual. A nondescript black case is brought forward and opened by the film’s prop master, a small object pulled out and handed to the first member of a group of journalists visiting the Atlanta set for the day.
Like clockwork, every time someone holds the object, they let out a soft exclamation of delight. It's one of the most precious props on the set of the film, and the one that surpasses expectations every time it's held. By the time it gets to me, I unintentionally let out a joyful yelp. The prop I'm holding, of course, is Baby Groot.
"When I bring Baby Groot out, people just die. They're like, 'You've got to be kidding me,'" Marvel prop master Russell Bobbitt tells the gathered group of press after we've all had a chance to hold him. "Obviously designing a 10" Groot, you know it's going to be special."
