Battery Damage - Stupid Question

I bought a few brand new batteries the other day to test out project I am building. When I loaded one of the trays the terminal sliced the plastic and it shorted out. I'm not sure if the battery itself shorted or if the other batteries just shorted through the metal body.(not sure that makes a difference) It got pretty hot but after it cooled i put a volt meter to it and it seems to still hold a charge. I am about to toss it but since it is brand new, I wanted to get a second opinion and see if it could be rewrapped and maybe used as a tester battery.

One for the recycle bin.

Imr cells are able to increase their internal resistance when loaded too much or shorted. This acts as a kind of protection, reducing the power output of the cell. However this protection mechanism has side effects, mainly the internal resistance rarely returns to its initial value.

Not worth risking it, at best it may under perform, at worst, who knows.
