I was fortunate enough to spend some time recently in the hallowed halls of Industrial Light and Magic meeting with director Duncan Jones and the team of special effects specialists behind the upcoming Warcraft motion picture. While there, I got a behind-the-scenes peek at footage of the animated orcs, costumed human actors, and sweeping vistas we’ll be seeing on the big screen in next month’s theatrical release.
The stars of the day were definitely the orcs, who the creators’ promise will be responsible for a huge chunk of the film’s dramatic screen time and story progression. During the event, I was privy to images of the rampaging humanoids leaping into battle, brawling in fisticuffs, and crushing humans with giant hammers, but I also saw subtly-directed scenes of humor and quiet tenderness that showed off the extraordinary detail possible through ILM’s computer-generated facial capture and motion capture technology. Jason Smith, the Visual Effects Supervisor in charge of Warcraft’s creatures, took us through the perilous process of creating such inhuman characters while retaining both a sense of bauthenticity and a fidelity to Warcraft’s iconic style.
