Best MTL tank - trying to quit smoking

Im The Doctor

Member For 4 Years
Hello,

Looking for some advice on what the best tank would be for someone trying to quit smoking. I vape like I smoke, so I like a tight draw.

I've been away from the vape world for a while and not really sure what's out there. Not looking for any cloud chasing stuff.

Currently I have a kayfun which has the draw that I like. I had an Atlantis but it was super airy. When I used it I had to close the airflow almost completely off. Like only 1/4 of the smallest air hole was open.

So what I'm looking for is a tank that has a nice tight draw (like smoking) and doesn't require me to rebuild. I still like the kayfun on a mech but want something more consistent that I can just drop in a replacement coil and keep it moving. I'll be using this on a Sigelei 150w without temp control.

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

With that said.. I like:
Protank 2 and the mini
Eleaf GS
UD Goblin MIni
Kabuki, though I'm still working out some kinks
Delta 2
Subtank Nano

A lot of people really like the Nautilus and the mini for MTL, but I've never tried one.

Before I got into dripping and then new-generation clearos, I was always a Protank fan. Though I did buy one Nautilus to PIF and was actually rather impressed with the flavor and cloud output from a 1.8 ohm coil and MTL draw...

This thread will be your friend. Lots of good info in there. I'm a MTL vaper, too.
http://vapingunderground.com/threads/next-gen-shorty-tanks-designed-for-mtl-use-ex-smokers.147757/

I started reading it before I posted this but it's almost 1300 posts long and not sure how much of it is current. I know things move alarmingly fast in the vape world and what's hot today is discovered to be a bust tomorrow. From my past experience stuff comes and goes fast, and vapers are used as beta testers.

I'll spend some time going through it but was hoping some folks here could sum it all up. Forgive me for being trifling

Sorry, didn't see this before I replied. I'll take a look at the thread and the ones you listed

Nope, you're not. Actually the thread isn't very old. The first tank discussed, iirc, is one we're still suggesting. Slim pickin's for us MTL vapers. Just jump on in at the end, and play catch up only if you feel the need. You're most welcome there. We have no strangers, just some stranger than others, but they're in the other threads. ;)

First, the thread has only been going a month or so, which @Huckleberried mentions, and second - being a fan of MTL means you're not part of the "hobbyist" market the companies are going after by re-releasing similar products every other week with some new bell or whistle. I see this as a sort of advantage, as it keeps the number of items to consider to at least a somewhat more-manageable deluge, and as the primary target market is "people first trying to quit smoking that want a draw like a cigarette" the tech doesn't change nearly as quickly.

Even though I moved onto direct-lung vaping after a year or so using MTL devices, I'm still pretty slow on the new tech - I just got a Crown tank about a month ago, it's been one of the hot devices on the other end of the spectrum for several months and is about to be supplanted with a new device that sadly doesn't support backward-compatible coils. It's much harder to wait to pull the trigger on or stick with a device for any length of time when you're being hit over the head with the latest and greatest every day, but if you choose wisely and luck out with a device you're satisfied with the first time around, resisting shiny-itus becomes easier.

I've been reading through the thread, seems the GS is in the lead. Ive only read 200 or so posts. Only on page 5 of 26+ though. Ultimately I want a tank that gives that nice tight draw and that I don't have to build. I have the kayfun now that I can build and has the right draw but would like to be able to just drop in a replacement coil rather than rebuild. I'll still use the kayfun at home but don't want to be a slave to building. Whatever tank I get though I want to be able to get replacement coils easily and relatively inexpensive. The fear is that I get something that works great but is either hard to find coils for or when I do find them they're ridiculously expensive

Really good flavor with this little guy. 3ml tank, replaceable coils, available in .15 Ti, 1.5 kanthal and I think, 1.8 also. I got mine from discount vapers, first pack of coils, too. Fasttech also carries them, so I tossed some on my most recent order. It has air flow control, so you can set it to a pretty tight draw. More airy than a Protank, but most things are, LOL. Really good flavor.

I've torn apart a couple of coils, they do seem pretty easy to rebuild if you like that kinda thing.

Wait...you still use a protank? I remember those. I had one but it had a strange flavor to it even after I cleaned it and replaced the heads. Don't really remember what the draw was like, just the weird taste. It left such a bad taste (literally and figuratively) in my mouth that I'm hesitant to try anything from Kanger again. Someone recommended the subtank but can't get past the protank debacle. Yours working good though? May have gotten a bad one. This was years ago, and may have been a protank 2, can't remember. I drank a lot when I was younger so memory not so much

Call me all hoity-toity and whatnot, but I do favor the Hurricane.

Not that hoity-toity, get a knockoff via Fasttech or another company--the authentic Hurricane's price will knock your socks off ($200) and ain't nobody going to pay that. Clone run around $20-25.

I used the original Protank 1 from when it was first released until I went to RDAs and strayed from the MTL path. Possible you got a bad one, I had 2 or 3 (possibly still have them) and swore by them for vaping less than 10 watts. It was like the Evod (my absolute favorite tank as a noob) but in glass instead of plastic.

I actually have, and use, two Protank 2 tanks. I also have several mini size and I've had great luck with mine. I do rebuild the coils, but even prior to that, I'm one of the people that NEVER had a single issue with them. I got one about a month after I started vaping and am still using that same one, picked up a 2nd.

The GS does have an airy-er draw (we're vapers, we get to make up words), but I do consider it a MTL tank. GREAT flavor on this bugger. The coils are teeny compared to most, I suppose they're reasonably priced, I'm not used to buying coils. I picked up a pack from DV to try them out, decided I like them enough to get more from FT.

The Hurricane I was very interested in (clone), but the PC tank changed my mind, I have no inteterest in the SS tank. Sucks, because I've heard great things about it, and the clone.

Could I ask why regarding the PC tank? I hate to say it, but almost everything I use is polycarbonate (I don't use a tank-cracking liquid, so I've never had any problems with this).

But is it leaching something into my liquid I need to be worried about or something, or is it just that your liquid will crack it?

Overall, I love glass, but...well, klutz. I knock my mod over constantly and drop it occasionally. At least the PC tanks just crack rather than shatter. :)

I've made it through about 400 posts so far, only 800 more to go. Probably going to have to skip ahead. Not really looking to do any rebuilding on a regular basis. Too much stuff outside of vaping for me to adopt another hobby so I want something plug and play. I have the kayfun if I decide to fiddle around with building coils

Seems like one of the complaints against the protanks was the super airy draw. Maybe I'll give them a second look though. Also had someone recommend a Nautilus, anyone have any thoughts on those for what I'm wanting?

I have been using a Nautilus full size for about a month for MTL. Works very well.
No complaints....yet. You can find them for under $20.00 online.

I have a GS-Tank and Mini Protank 3 with the AFC base, and my wife has a Nautilus Mini. All three are running 1.5-1.8Ω coils. Of the three: I prefer the Mini Protank 3 with the AFC base. I think an Aerotank Mini is the same thing, with a slightly different drip tip.

The tanks are inexpensive: $18 at myvaporstore. The coils are equally economical, at about $2/ea.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a couple Aerotank Minis, in fact. One for my wife and one for me.

I would recommend the Nautilus or the Triton 2 mini. The nautilus is easier to use than the Trition 2 mini. I'm using Trition 2 mini clapton coils in both. I am quite pleased with this. I have been using a nautilus for a few years now.

I recently PIF'd my GS tank. I liked it but the triton 2 mini was better. I want to keep it simple on buying coils.

I'm with you, want to keep it as simple as possible. Speaking of coils, which ones seem to give you the best bang for the buck? I know in the past there were some tanks that would go through coils 2-3 times per week. This is another reason I'm somewhat leery about using the "buy it and try it" method.

Super airy on a Protank? More like super tight airflow..for me it was like sucking on a skinny straw..wish it was airy, or I wouldn't have thrown it in the garbage... Lololo

I tried the GS on a recommendation from that thread ( thank you Huck). But found it to be too airy for me. Even with all the air holes closed down. I have four Nautilus tanks and they're perfect for MTL,, air is adjustable but cranked down to the smallest hole gives me the tight draw I look for. Coils are easy to find and Triton Mini Clapton coils fit it as well. I have a couple DL subohm tanks too but always go back to those Nautilus tanks for a good ol MTL.

Oh and btw,, I clean the nautilus coils in vodka and reuse them. Only once though, flavor suffers but I get at least a month out of those coils.

Now starting to think I got a bad one. Got mine on a co op and it was very early on so may have been a defect. I may check around and see if anyone has one in the classifieds

So far I'm looking at a protank, nautilus, and triton 2. Probably hold off on the GS if you found it to be too airy.

Don't you have the evic vtc? I had an evic tube mod long ago (when everyone was on the provari bandwagon). Question: do you use the USB charger, and how well does it work? I have a Sigelei 150w but it doesn't have that option so I'll have to make sure the batteries are charged and/or take spares with me. Just wondering if the evic could charge the 18650 or is it a pass through?

I don't think it's recommended that you use any mod to charge your batteries. Some can, just not the best idea so I'd stay away from it.

That was what I always thought as well but several of the newer ones have a micro USB port so wasn't sure if that was just for use as a pass through or if there was some newfangled technology that allowed you to charge while in the mod. I need to buy a charger anyway so it's not a big deal just wasn't sure. I know on the evic it's also how you upgrade the firmware

Yeah, from what I've seen most of them make a note saying the port is for firmware upgrades and charging is not recommended even when it's possible to do so.

Been using mine for 2 years, still no leaks, and no gurgling, 70/30VG.

Uses stock Kanger PT2 heads but they kinda suck IMO.
I rebuild them so...

I guess it depends on how good is the mod's charging circuit. For some mods, such as my VV4, that's the only way. I've charged my eVic-VTC Mini that way a half-dozen times or more.

Not saying you can't, just that from what I've seen most mods that you can suggest that you charge externally.

What I've been using the most in the last 1+ years, is the Protank 2 with added AFC.

but also, with this: http://www.kidneypuncher.com/bdc-to-protank-adapter/

So, you can use regular kanger coils with the PT2 as is; add the adapter and you can use the Kanger dual coils; add the little white grommet to the chimney and you can use the Aspire BDC or BVC coils. That's what I typically use - the BVC's. No fuss, no muss, no leaks.

Hey so heres a follow up question about nic level. In the past I was vaping 18-24 mg. When I started using the kayfun and atlantis it was way too much. Since then people here have recommended that I go much lower (6 mg) with those devices. Question is, with the tanks we're talking about would I need to adjust my nic level? Would it still be 18-24 or would it need to be more like 6?

If you're looking to break the nicotine thing continually drop. Maybe start at 18mg, then try out a 12mg and see if that's satisfactory. Personally once I drop to 3mg it's not about the nicotine even with subohming, it's simply about flavor, you lose all that tingly nicotine goodness at that point. But, if you're looking to get rid of that habit, just keep dropping regularly trying it out and seeing if it's good enough for you.

Basically though, there is no right answer it's all personal. I'd recommend going with 18mg and working your way down as it suits you.

For the rare times I do use a sub-ohm tank, I mix lower nic. My norm is about 10mg with all my MTL tanks.

I do 18mg in the morning and afternoon, 12mg evenings/nighttime

But then, I'm also not looking to stop using nic or to stop vaping. I just wanted to replace my smoking 2 PAD and this is good for me. YMMV

I think I wasn't very clear earlier when asking about nic level. when I started vaping, it was to quit smoking. Started at 18-24 mg which worked great for the setups I had at that time.

When I switched and started going with kayfuns, mechs, and atlantis tanks it became too much. Like trying to vape off a 12 gauge. Mentioned this to someone else who advised that the higher nic levels will take the top of your head off if used with that setup (as opposed to say a CE4/MVP type setup)

So I'm wondering now if I need 2 different nic levels depending on what I intend to vape it in. For example, should I go with a higher nic level when using something that doesn't produce as much vapor (like the stuff we're talking about here)? Since none of the tanks we're talking about here really produce what a mech/subohm tank can, maybe I'm better off using a higher level in the +1 ohm tanks and a lower level nic in the sub ohm tanks.

I'm leaning more and more towards just getting a lower level nic and using my kayfun on the Sigelei 150 while I try to figure out what tank I want. I have this bad habit of making stuff too complicated and it seems I'm starting to go down that road again.

I used to charge my evic (tube mod) via USB all the time and never had an issue. That one though didn't do to 75w or do sub ohm or any of that stuff so wasn't sure

I use 3mg for my dripper and 6mg for MTL, so yes, having different strengths is a good idea. With first gen tanks you would need 12mg at least and high PG juice.

So I'm thinking 6mg for the kayfuns (which is what was recommended to me). Also going to build the coils for them at 1.2 - 1.3. Should allow me to get a nice draw without hacking up a lung (I'm your huckleberry) and still be enough to get me off the smokes. Don't have a dripper, never got into that.
