No Halloween would be complete without a spooky new release, a bill Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott aim to fill with Black Magick #1. The latest debut to hit Image Comics' ever fruitful stable, Black Magick makes an instant impression with its murky musings and strikingly bleak aesthetic. While the debut leaves a few threads feeling left a bit too close to the vest, the resulting read still impresses with its engaging lead and pore-worthy art.

The opening pages of issue #1 are at once moody, Scott's ink soaked panels crafting an immediate sense of unease. It's a familiar sort of setup, yet just when you think you know what comes next, Rucka's story pulls an immediate and humorous U-turn, offering something decidedly different. This transition proves both a boon and a hindrance for the issue as a whole, as while there's a definite uniqueness to the read, the depths of said uniqueness remain almost frustratingly out of sight.
