President Donald Trump played a key role in accelerating the change. According to reports, Trump personally pressured FDA Commissioner Marty Makary over the weekend, rebuking him for slow-walking flavored vape approvals. Trump had campaigned on a promise to “save” vaping, viewing it as important to younger “Make America Great Again” voters and the broader industry. Months of appeals from vape manufacturers, combined with White House discussions, pushed the agency to act.

Critics worry about renewed youth appeal, but supporters argue the age-gated products offer adult smokers a safer alternative.
