Silly question may have been asked I feel the answer is a no but.... Can you use say ss core (or any tc wire) and kanthal a1 and have the tc function? Or does both wire have to be the same or similar tc wire? Thank you kindly for your time and knowledge

Long story short, yes you can use SS cores with KA1 or N80 wrap wire and use TC because the vast majority of the current will go through the core wire.

It depends on the gauge of the wire used for the Clapton wrap. Most of the current will pass through the core wire, but if the wrap wire is close to the same gauge as the core then will mess up the calculations by the mod. Most builders will use wrap wire at least 10 gauges smaller than the core wire. Like 26/36 or 28/38. Also using spaced coils helps in accuracy as well.
