I see why people set them off in Hotels but not at home. Residential ones are tuned to go off with more smoke present. Which quite frankly is dangerous. So I went ahead and installed commercial units with micro processor controlled dual sensors. Photo and ion. The Photo is what is going off of course. They are monitored but luckily I have them in test mode so as not to notify the alarm company to call the FD. Unfortunately from 30 feet away they go off in 20 seconds. they are interconnected so you can imagine the noise. Now i am relegated to vaping in the bathroom with the fan on. You do not put smokies in a bathroom but there is a heat sensor. That is unaffected. I feel much safer with these but of course they are inconvenient for my "hobby". On the other hand I feel they are a darn good idea. Fires are no laughing matter. It goes to show a residential unit never went off the commercial units must meet different standards and go off almost instantly even if i am not right near them. I can deal with it because i feel it is worth my life. Most homes do not have these so they do not go off but if there was a real fire they can take up to 15 minutes to go off and that can mean your life. So i am just pointing out this is why they go off in Hotels but not in most homes. On the positive side at least an Ecig is not "lit" like an analog. Which is how many tragedies occur in the first place. So even though now I have caused my self a nuisance Ecigs are still safer in that respect. Just another reason to be pro ecig. In fact I would think of all people the FD would get behind them. Safe for your health or not they are much less likely to cause a fire. Just a pain in the ass for me now but I am glad I went and did this quite frankly. I just found it very interesting the difference. Residential units may alarm much too late.
No, I just use the hell out of them. Hope it works out for you! Oh, hey. Put one on the back of your front door, too. That way, when you leave the house, gentle reminder.
