After 21 years away, I'm going back to the US. In that time, I've spent 5 months in the US on about 5 or 6 visits. Before I came here, I spent another 3 years in Asia. That's a long time. My last time in the US was 2015. We're moving to Atlanta because my wife's family is there as well as my sister.

I'm scared. I've been to over 90 countries, many times all by myself. I've been in war zones many times. I've trekked the Himalayas, the jungles of SE Asia, walked the streets of the West Bank at night during the Intifada, hitchhiked across two continents by myself, been caught in a couple of massive riots, talked my way out of numerous encounters with police and immigration officials, including bribing a police captain in Yugoslavia to keep my self out of jail. Yet, I'm scared to go home.

I just had to say that. I really need to just tell someone then maybe I can deal with it. I'm going to a place that seems so foreign to me, it truly does. I'm totally comfortable to walk the streets of dozens of places most people would never want to go to, but the thought of the US is freaking me out. It's not the place I left and I don't know how to deal with this right now. :(

It's not just you man, I think many of us wonder wth is going on some days.
Welcome back though, I'm jealous of your adventures. :)

I'm about your age and I sure don't remember this being the America I grew up in.

C'mon man..... put on a pair of Fruit-of-the-Loom tighty whiteys and then your big boy pants, get off the plane in a "red state" while scratchin' your balls and shout out "Murica!!!"

the welcome wagon will hand you a coupon for free ammo with your next handgun purchase and your new neighbors will grill you a hot dog while you explain to them that there really is a place called Kathmandu and not just a weird word in a rockin' Bob Seger song

and, as always, heed the Agent J Diplomacy Maxim......"Don't start nuthin', won't be nuthin'"
you'll be fine

Apologies....
the snark overcame me
But, welcome home

I'll show myself out.....

It's a heck of a time to be moving anywhere - I feel for you and your family on this, truly

Remember, the majority of Americans of all races and creeds are hunkered down and bewildered at the violence and pestilence

As a student of history - and someone who was born and grew up in the 60s - what is going on in the US right now is just a repeat of what we have already been through many times in the past, and our country and all people have always come out of it better and stronger than it was before

Not everyone gets a full fair share of positive change, but gain is gain, even when very painful

Ask yourself what are the things you identifying as scarring you - might be a good place to start

It is okay to feel fear for what you are about to do, as long as you don't let the fear stop you from doing what is best for you and yours

Feel free to PM if you just wanna vent or talk privately

Specto, it’s not one of the Mud Pit threads. Bob was asking for some encouragement not snark. :smh:

It’s very strange now, but perhaps the strangeness is endemic globally now? We’re all here if you need to vent or talk. Welcome back!
