Time was, you went to buy a console and it had a pack-in game. The NES had Super Mario Bros. The Super NES had Super Mario World. The Sega Genesis had Altered Beast in the pre-Sonic era, believe it or not. Now consoles don't have pack-in games when they first launch. But eventually console bundles are introduced to entice new customers, and they represent some of the best ways to save some dough when jumping into a new console ecosystem.
An even more recent phenomenon is adding a game to a console customized to pay homage to the very game you want to play. The PS4 has several such bundles, some of which have been discontinued, but are still kicking around warehouses and available for purchase, often at a pretty healthy discount.
