Coughing a lot from vaping

Little background...I used to vape about a couple years ago (Nautilus mini) and for whatever reason got side tracked and started smoking cigarettes again and stopped vaping. I tried quitting cold turkey a few times but it didn't last long. I was smoking and drinking, and getting pressured from those around to make some lifestyle changes. So I figured instead of going cold turkey again I'd vape as a way of calming my cravings for smokes and alcohol. To my surprise I found the kit I bought, the Triton mini a much better experience than the old Nautilus mini I had from a couple years ago. I believe it is because I just prefer a more airy draw and the bigger air flow on the Triton was just what I liked.. So I've been clean from cigarettes and alcohol for 2 weeks now and to be honest it hasn't been that hard.

However I have noticed as of late that I'm coughing more frequently. I inhale just like I would a cigarette (MTL) but sometimes through the inhale or exhale I get this tickle in the back of my throat and it just forces me to cough. It doesn't happen every time, just every now and then. I drink plenty of fluids throughout the day so I don't believe it's from dry mouth.

Has anyone experienced this? All my vaping juice is 65vg/35pg.

Drink more water. PG tends to absorb water soooo that will make you cough. Drinking more water will help. Also if you are getting big clouds, try using 20pg/80 vg, it is a bit smoother. Lowering nicotine will also help, but I would give it about a month at your current level before decreasing nicotine. (you will vape more after decreasing nicotine, but that will level out as you get used to it)

How long have you been smoking? You may be experiencing a common quit smoking problem rather than a start vaping problem. It takes longer than 2 weeks off cigarettes for your body to go through a lot of quit smoking changes. For some people that's coughing up a lot of lung crap, you might get sore throat problems... - lot's of things that would happen anyway even if you weren't switching to vaping when you quit.

Good point. Yeah I thought that could be it. I've been smoking off and on for 16 years. Cigarettes don't make me cough though. However I did read this could be because of the numbing agents they put in cigarettes so you don't cough. I'll increase the VG eventually and give my body more time to adjust to no cigarettes. Maybe then I won't cough as much...we'll see. Thanks for your input.

I agree that 2 wks is just about enough time for the crap in your lungs to start loosening and wanting to come out, which means coughing.

Keep in mind too, some of us actually cough MORE if there is higher VG -- I can't use more than 15% VG or it feels like I have a hairball in my chest that I cannot get rid of.

Drink lots of not just water, but ALL non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic beverages; not just right now, but continuing as long as you vape -- PG *and* VG grab whatever moisture they find so you can exhale it as visible vapor.

It could also be the flavoring.
A flavor high in citrus like lemon will be harder on the throat then a flavor like banana.
Custard flavors can taste very dry as well, causing coughing.
A cinnamon flavor can cause coughing due to being cinnamon.
Some cherry flavors can have a sorta 'cough medicine' effect on the throat (which is why most cough medicines are cherry).

Thank you both for the informative feedback. I'm not sure what this means but today I discovered if I put my watts at around 11 watts instead of the normal 17.5, I don't cough. At 11 watts I don't get that tickle in the back of my throat inducing a cough. My inhale is a little bit longer but I don't cough now on the exhale. I'm starting to think the amount of vapor I'm getting at 17.5, even though tasty, is just too much and irritates my throat causing me to cough. For now I'll stick to 11 watts for a little while and see if my coughs fully cease.

For you DIY people out there did you find the juice you made way more smooth and less cough inducing than commercial bought? I'm thinking if a juice maker puts in some cheap nicotine and some other cheap ingredients that could be the source of my irritation. May have to go DIY sooner than later.

Yes lower the wattage a bit, vaping is much different than smoking and it will take a bit to get used to it. Just take lighter puffs in the beginning and drink plenty of water. I would gargle with warm salt water at night and that seemed to help my irritated throat.
I was a 30+ year cigarette smoker and coughed for the first few weeks when I started vaping, which was getting used to vaping and my lungs clearing out too! I set a quit date and cut back on cigs for two weeks until I hit my quit date- then will power and ecigs only! It is up to you to decide when or if to quit cigs, I have not had a cigarette since Dec,1,2014.
I have only used commercial eliquids and started out with 50pg/50vg at 24nic( used a small vape pen)
Now I am down to 3nic and use 30pg/70vg liquids but I use higher wattage and DL tanks and RDAs and still no coughing.
Do you have a Vape Shop you could go to? Maybe try some liquids there or they could help , but from my experience it has been alot of trial and error on what eliquids I like, once I narrowed down my favorite flavors that has helped me really enjoy vaping more than cigarettes!
My hubby dual uses, he only vapes at work- and he coughs all the time! I wish he would quit cigarettes, but he has to make that choice and he is not fully committed to doing that yet! Even with me seeing and smelling his cigarettes, I have no desire to ever smoke cigarettes again! The stink of them reinforces my disgust of cigarettes and I am grateful that ecigs and will power helped me get cigs out of my life!

Thanks for the advice. I actually turned to online e-juice because the vape shop near me just has horrible expensive juice. A friend of mine who is really into vaping suggested 'The Grape White by Lost Art' and that one was my first real good e-juice that I've had. Made a big order with VapeWild but I'm still letting them steep. So far Fruit Hoops, Milk and Berries, and 'Merica have been good right out of the box. Like you, the plan was to narrow down to some flavors that I like and be at a point where I never want to look back at a cigarette again. I'll eventually do some DIY and maybe sample a few other online shops to see how they compare. Congrats on kicking the cancer sticks!

Can't really answer that, since vaping never made me cough, except for those occasional "inhaled it wrong or something" kinda coughs. I got those with cigarettes too, sometimes. :D I've always had to add an ingredient called Flash, to provide MORE throat hit, since I've never vaped over 10mg, and always high PG, but always wanted more TH, and now that I'm down to 3mg, I REALLY need to accentuate the TH; 85% PG can only do so much, with nicotine that low.

But as you see from that... there are all kinds who vape; those who need it smooth, those who want it rough as hell. :D DIY can be customized to whatever you prefer, much flavor, little flavor, megasweet, barely sweet at all, etc etc etc... whatever you like.

I used to get throat tickle with MTL on Aspire tanks (but not on every puff, usually on the first few puffs after a break of 20 min or longer). But when got rid of the Aspire tanks, increased my wattage a little to above 13W (I vape between 15W & 18W these days), decreased my nic from 18mg to 12mg, and increased my airflow and started DL...no more tickling.

I use 50/50 juice and have used 50/50 juice since I started vaping.

Also, to address the coughing as a result of quitting cigarettes, not everyone goes through the "coughing up lung cooikes" stage after quitting smoking. I was a 2.5 pack a day smoker, full flavor and non-filter, for over 20 years. After switching to vaping now for over 2 years, I have yet to cough up a lung cookie.

I smoked anywhere from 1-3 pks a day, for 39 yrs... and never really went thru that. I coughed like that EVERY DAY when I smoked, due to my asthma, so I suspect I kept my lungs somewhat clearer than most smokers, on a regular basis... because the asthma forced me to do so. After 2 2/3 yrs vaping, I still *occasionally* get the "inhaled it wrong" sort of tickle/cough, but not as often as I did at first. I think it's just a matter of getting used to it.

I will never abandon tight-draw MtL vaping.

I just did a little experiment. I lowered my wattage to 10W and decreased my airflow to the tightest setting on both the Joyetech elitar tank and the subtank nano and I drew MTL. Using 50/50 12mg USA juice.

Sometimes I get a throat tickle, but not enough to make me cough. But the throat tickle was there, for sure. Sort of like smoking a cig but holding the smoke in your mouth for 5 seconds or so before inhaling it (that always tickled my throat - much like smoking a stale cigarette).

I forgot to mention back when I was using 18mg juice and used to get thoart tickle, I was using Chinese juice. Not sure of that matters, too, but noteworthy IMHO.

So, take this for what it's worth. It's hardly scientific, but noteworthy IMHO.

Everyone is going to react differently to vaping so you have to try and find what works for you. I spent hundreds of dollars and a lot of time before I found what works for me. But at my smoking level, it was worth it because I was spending $300-400/month in cigarettes anyhow.

BTW: I'm not trying to get the OP to go DL instead of MTL. Just stating my experience. I always said I would never DL. What made me switch from MTL to DL was that I bough the subtank mini and was disappointed that it sucked for MTL even at it's tightest airflow setting. I started dabbling in DL and when I realized the flavor was much better than MTL, I switched to DL exclusively.

I'm not a flavor chaser or a cloud chaser. I'm a nicotine chaser. LOL But I definitely was never happy with the flavor when I was doing MTL. But I don't like too much flavor either. Everyone is different.

Yeah that is a good point. I'll have to look into that Flash ingredient as I may need it. I remember trying American Spirit cigarettes and they were too smooth. I didn't get a throat hit like I was used to and that was the last pack I bought.

I'm only vaping with 3mg as I found the higher nicotine is just too harsh for my tastes. I did try DL on this Triton mini the other day (even though it wasn't designed for that - so it doesn't do it real good) I noticed the hit of nicotine is much more prominent as you would expect. Maybe when I get a decent DL tank I'll like it more, we'll see. I'm curious after spending all that money to find out what you like, what e-juice did you settle on? What's your favorite tank currently?

The reason why I spent so much money on vaping when I started is because I wanted so bad to be able to find a cigalike that was good, but I never could. I did not understand the science behind vaping at the time so I did not realize that every cigalike was the same, except for the Kanger ESmart. And the only reason that was slightly better is because it was a top coil tank system as opposed to a bottom coil, foam filled cartridge. It still tasted like crap because of the silica wick, but it produced a warmer vape due to the top coil.

I ended up trashing the idea that I needed a a vape that looked like a cigarette and went for an eGo twist and the rest is history.

My favorite tanks are the Hotcig Taifun GT2 RTA clone (no longer made), The Kanger Toptank Mini and Subtank Mini & Nano. The Kangers I use as both a clearomizer and as RTAs. But I still DL all of them, even the Taifun which is very restricted even at it's loosest airflow. I like a restricted DL. I have also been loving the Elitar tanks that come with the Elitar pipe mods with the BF 1.0 ohm SS heads.

To be honest, I much prefer not to make my own coils and make things as easy as possible, but there is no factory coil head that is as good as an RTA. Sometimes I require an RTA to get a good level of flavor for me. One RTA coil/wick lasts much longer for me than any factory coil head and is much cheaper, of course. Buying coil heads all the time can be quite expensive especially if you buy from a brick and mortar at $4-5 per head.

I have many other RTAs I have recently bought on a binge buying streak (Kayfun 5 Clone and a Serpent Mini to name a couple) but I am so infatuated with my Elitars right now, I haven't made time to check them out yet.

I used to cough alot when I first started vaping and get alot of sinus pressure...it took me about a year before I admitted to myself it was because of the high PG liquid I was using ...I started vaping high VG juices and it all went away.

PG makes me cough really bad, which means my mixes have to be 70vg/30pg or even 80/20

Thanks for sharing your experiences. The next juices I buy will be 80vg/20pg and see if that makes a difference. Didn't know pg bothered so many people. I guess that could be why I'm coughing.

Yeah I hated the blu ecigs. Absolutely horrible flavor with a disgusting aftertaste. Needless to say I only bought it one time. I just bought the Siren tank today for the main reason that I can build my own coils and save money. I considered the Nautilus X but I'm not paying $2.99 a coil lol without even the option to build my own. Also it will be nice to finally be able to vape the 80vg/20pg juices to see if it improves my coughing spasms. From the responses here, now I'm starting to think it is the pg.

Welp, PG is a known irritant. Even Dow Chemical lists irritation from inhalation as a possible side effect.

Of note is you said when you dropped your wattage you had less of a problem with coughing. I think switching up your PG/VG ratios is a good thing to try. But you may simply be going through an "insult to injury" phase here, introducing something new to your lungs during the quit smoking phase. Just backing off on the intensity of you vape may be all you need right now.

When I started I was a 2 PAD smoker. I was also in a lot of denial about how much I was actually coughing from smoking cigarettes. Vape gear was a lot less efficient over 5 years ago when I quit. Regardless any attempt to lung inhale early on sent me into far worse coughing fits than I ever experienced from smoking. I had to give my lungs some time to rest and deal with the quit smoking phase before I could lung inhale vape. It really wasn't that hard - just inhaled the vape like a cigar instead. Suck it in, back of the throat - and stop.

If you are wondering too you don't get much nicotine from lung inhaling vapor anyway. Vapor molecules are much larger than cigarette smoke and don't pass through the alveoli in your lungs. Most of your nic absorption is done in the mucous linings of your mouth, nose and throat.

Good information, thanks for sharing. I'll update everyone when I switch to 80/20 if things improves.

Wanted to post my findings in reply to Rickajho's comment on vapor molecules size.
From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_cigarette_aerosol_and_liquid

A 2014 WHO report found e-cigarettes release a lower level of particles than traditional cigarettes.[39] Comparable to a traditional cigarette, e-cigarette particles are tiny enough to enter the alveoli, enabling nicotine absorption.[29] E-cigarettes companies assert that the particulates produced by an e-cigarette are too tiny to be deposited in the alveoli.[40] Exactly what comprises the vapor varies in composition and concentration across and within manufacturers.[13] Different devices generate different particle sizes and cause different depositions in the respiratory tract, even from the same nicotine liquid.[41] Reports in the literature have shown respiratory and cardiovascular effects by these smaller size particles, suggesting a possible health concern.[42]

I realize this is a late post, but felt this article left off with incorrect information and wanted the next reader to have good info.

A lot more. Keep a glass in your bathroom. The PG is drying your membranes and causes you to cough. The added benefit is more water helps flush all the crap out of your system, and loosen up crud stuck in your lungs (helps for mucus). My sputum from coughing was totally vulgar for about 2 weeks after starting vaping.. grey to brown and finally cleared up.

Everything I would of said was already posted but I would like too add. As I started vaping I could not deeply inhale or inhale the vape at all for a whole month. I ended up at the lowest watt for my tank too work, and just collected the vape in my mouth. Exhaling through my nose and mouth to get as much nicotine as possible. After a month I finally could start taking these huge hits with direct lung. Patience is the key :)

Yes,

- I am allergic to some flavors, like raspberry and lemon

- I will cough if my vape is too warm (not enough air) and I vape too quickly

- MTL coils made of nichrome will give me a crazy super tickle in my throat that will make my eyes water, and want to cough like crazy for about 30 seconds, randomly

I get winter allergies real bad and when it comes I cough like a 50 year smoker. There is a little tickle that gets in the back of my throat from Late December through February. As soon as the allergies clear up the hacking goes away.
