Depending how rough you are on things, have you considered vinyl wrap? They sell it for automotive and many places sell it in smaller manageable pieces. Carbon fiber is a popular design but there are others. It would act similar to electrical tape but without all the sticky edges. Usually making multiple wraps of electrical tape (at least when I've done it) the edges of the strips where it overlaps tend to peel up some and leave sticky residue.
It'd probably still nick or scratch if it hit something sharp but it doesn't peel up from handling that I've noticed. I've got it on the battery covers of my mod using it every day in the heat of summer, sweaty hands etc and it's not even tried to peel up on me in the past few weeks. There's a variety of colors, patterns from carbon fiber to camouflage, matte, metallic etc.
Not sure how it'd react to the mod but on other metal painted surfaces I've peeled it up and it hasn't taken any of the paint with it. Peels up clean with no residue.
