Having generally been a well reviewed, buzzed about cult series in previous years, The 100 received quite a lot of media attention this past spring in the wake of backlash over the death of the character Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and fan outrage regarding this turn of events. There was a lot of discussion in the wake of this about television tropes, in terms of the death of gay characters on TV (and the specific circumstances under which they often occur), along with the role social media played in The 100 – with some feeling the show's executive producer/showrunner, Jason Rothenberg, had gone too far in encouraging a belief among fans that Lexa would survive.
