Some years back, Mark Millar and Steve McNiven created a comic called Nemesis that asked the question, "What if Batman was the Joker?" In that case, the book was basically exploring what would happen if someone with the skills and resources of Batman used that power to spread chaos and anarchy instead of warring on criminals. But Dark Nights: Metal has taken that question much more literally. The Batman Who Laughs, the twisted leader of Barbatos' Dark Knights, is truly a Batman who transformed into the Joker. This one-shot explores how that evolution came about. It offers welcome insight into one of the more memorable villains Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have added to the Batman mythos, even if this issue never digs quite as deep into the character's past as it could.
