After I finished Bloodborne last year, I decided, like many From Software newbies, to explore the developer’s back catalogue in order to ride a similar high. I was hungry for the same speed and the same aggression, the same sense I was playing chicken against a world with no fear. I went into Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 with the intent to play fast, mean, and hard.
I immediately hit a learning curve so steep I barely made it halfway up. As From Software veterans know, Dark Souls is a very different series to Bloodborne. It’s slower and weightier; there's more waiting around during combat. As I played, I felt like Andre the Giant floundering about in the featherweight division: I kept trying to roll around enemies to dodge their blows, but my armoured body was too slow. Lifting my sword felt too heavy. I was running through molasses.
