Last week could have marked the end of the road for Rip Hunter and his team. Against all odds, they managed to defeat and imprison the mighty Vandal Savage. Only Kendra’s unilateral decision to spare Savage’s life prevented the conflict from reaching a quick and premature end. Even she may be regretting that choice now, as “River of Time” showed just how dangerous the immortal villain can be.
Casper Crump’s Savage has too often been the recurring weak point with this show, as he lacks the raw charisma and menace of the of either Flash’s Zoom or Arrow’s Damien Darhk. This episode marked a major turning point in that regard. Crump’s performance still has its troublesome aspects (mainly his thick and utterly non-Egyptian-sounding accent), but this week was all about proving what a master manipulator Savage can be. He basically played Hannibal Lecter for the entire episode, playing on his captors’ various fears and insecurities and manipulating his way right out of an inescapable cell.
