A detector buried deep in Antarctic ice recorded 13 radio bursts consistent with Askaryan radiation, a long-predicted effect where high-energy cosmic rays produce particle cascades that emit radio waves. The result provides the first experimental evidence of the phenomenon in ice and strengthens the Antarctic array’s ability to search for ultrahigh-energy cosmic neutrinos. [phys.org]
