Illumination’s Despicable Me franchise has edged past DreamWorks Animation’s series of Shrek films (including Puss In Boots) to become the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time worldwide. According to Deadline, Despicable Me 3’s latest international weekend gross has nudged the series to a worldwide total of USD$3.528B across the three Despicable Me films, plus Minions. The global box office figures for the four Shrek movies and Puss In Boots reportedly sits at USD$3.51B.
Animated by Paris-based Illumination Mac Guff, the Despicable Me series was an immediate hit from the release of the highly-successful first film in 2010. It was followed by a sequel in 2013 and the lucrative Minions spin-off in 2015. Minions would go on to outperform the Despicable Me films and is the second highest-grossing animated film of all-time (behind Frozen). It’s also the most profitable film in Universal’s history.
