Difference between a 0.7 ohm and 1.8 ohm coil

Hi - recently bought a Aspire Nautilus 2 tank and eleaf istick tc40w. Bloke in shop rattled thru a load of stuff but i'm new to this so didn't take it all in. He switched some stuff round but I'm not sure what. Noticed last week that it was tasting of burning so thought I'd switch the coil. Noticed that the one I'm putting in has 0.7ohm written on it, the old one had 1.8ohm. I had thought when i bought it it was just a straight replacement. What is the difference between the 2 - pros and cons? Do I need to use different settings? And how often should i replace these coils? Sorry for newbie questions and thanks

The 1.8, and pretty much any other non sub ohm coil (below 1.0ohm), are normally made for MTL (Mouth to Lung) vaping. But they definitely are made to only handle 10Watts or less. The higher the ohm the lower the wattage required to run the coil (especially when it comes to prebuilt coils).

Your 1.8 ohm coil likely has smaller holes in the sides, to reduce the amount of juice (e liquid) flow. Sometimes they do this with the actual metal wall of the coil and other times it is simply done with a non permeable barrier (the material covering the open holes on the side of the coil). This is due to this type of coils inability to vaporize as much liquid (if it had larger holes it would leak)

In other words the 1.8 ohm coil is meant to be run at lower wattage, will work better with a juice that has a higher level of PG (like 50PG/50VG), and doesn't produce as much vapor, which in turn doesn't use as much juice and also has a lot of people use higher nicotine with these coils (With a weaker coil like this we tend to consider a 12mg juice equal to about 3mg when using a sub ohm coil)

The .7ohm is your sub ohm coil. This will have much larger juice openings, is meant to be run anywhere from 15-25 Watts (closer to 15 if using a high percentage VG juice like 80VG/20PG *thick juice) and is the only coil that is really designed to run a high VG juice. It produces much more Vapor, tends to be much warmer and is generally great for desert flavored e liquid. But it uses more of that juice, more of your battery per hit, and will probably leak if you run higher lvl PG juice in it. Hitting the .7 coil MTL with the airflow closed will also cause the coil to be overwhelmed and leak as well.

But the bottom line is this, they ARE plug and play. It is just the wattage you run them at is all you need to change. If you try to use the 1.8 at the wattage level you had your .7 at (20W) you'll burn it. If you do the opposite and use the .7 coil at the 1.8 level (7W) it is unlikely to produce any vapor.

So if you are hitting your Vape like a cigarette, then the 1.8 at 7 Watts is probably the coil for you. If you hit it like a joint or DTL (Direct to Lung) then either way you are fine, but the .7 is probably the better coil for you.

The only reasons why they wouldn't be interchangeable is if you have a very high VG juice (with very low water %) in your tank. This will cause your 1.8ohm coil to likely give you dry (burned) hits, even at very low Wattage.

If you have the opposite and are using a high PG juice in your tank and put the .7 coil in. The tank might leak, but the hit you get will definitely be harsh on your throat.

Well that went on way longer than intended. Hope it helps

WOW - thanks for the comprehensive reply. Incredibly helpful. As I've ONLY got the 0.7 (threw the 1.8 out) and really wanted to vape today, i've set it at 19W, opened the air holes, only have 50/50 juice, and it seems pretty satisfying (possibly a bit more than I found the 1.8, TBH. I'm a 40 a day, strong cig smoker....... And I'm not worried about the leakage - they always seem to leak a bit, right?

Cliff notes

1.8ohm coil
Good for- MTL, Higher % PG juice, Higher Nicotine lvl juice
Bad for- Higher VG juice, Vapor Production
Wattage range - <10

.7ohm coil
Good for- DTL (okay for MTL), Higher % VG juice, Lower Nicotine juice
Bad for- High PG juice, Uses more juice and battery
Wattage range - 15 to 25

Oh and coils last anywhere from 4 days to multiple weeks.

It depends on how often you hit it, what juice you run through it (example- juices with added sweeteners kill coils), what Wattage you use with it and finally preference of taste. Some people don't mind when a coil isn't perfect and others do.

I've found this site helpful at explaining the benefits of sub-ohming.

http://vaping360.com/what-is-sub-ohm-vaping-and-the-dangers-of-sub-ohm-vapes/

Basically, the lower your resistance, the thicker your clouds will be. Higher ohms give better flavor. Furthermore, most regulated devices cap voltage at 9.99, so at a lower resistance, you can go higher on the wattage and get a warmer vape, which simply can't be beat with some juices. It's all down to personal preference. To keep things simple and avoid using technical jargon, sub-ohming is mainly for cloud chasers.

But there is one big thing to consider: There is a point where you can go so low on resistance that it overdrives your batteries, causing them to vent. A vent is where your batteries basically give out and, to keep things nice and simple, will start shooting fire out of the bottom of the mod (best case scenario.) In extreme cases, the batteries could potentially explode, taking your mod and perhaps part of your hand with it.

Hopefully, you're using a regulated device. Regulated devices have a chip built in that checks the resistance before firing. If the resistance drops below a certain level (in most cases 0.1 ohms but some regulated devices do allow you to go lower), the protection kicks in, preventing the mod from firing. You will get a message on the display similar to "Ohms too low" or "Low resistance", depending on your mod.

As for regulated vs. unregulated, there is simply no difference in taste between the two. With a regulated mod, you can blow clouds that are just as thick as the unregulated guys. There really is no benefit to using an unregulated device that I'm aware of, aside from the fact that you can go down to a dead short on an unregulated device, which I highly advise you avoid for your own sake, at least until you get more "vaping experience." It's basically for advanced vapers that *really* know what they're doing and want to vape at insanely low resistances.

That seems about the right settings. Just realize you will be getting much more Vapor and as a result much more Nicotine.

Oh and no problem, I'm glad to help.

If you close up the air holes a bit you will get a warmer vape. Just don't close them up too much or you can overwhelm the coil and it'll leak down the center through those air holes.

That is the only place a tank should leak. It really shouldn't leak at all though. If you shut the air holes when refilling it helps with that

I'm now terrified of the battery exploding.... and no chance to get to the vape shop for the next 48 hours, but don't want to just revert to my cigs. If I keep wattage at around 17, and keep air holes opened up, is that the safest way of using this coil? Also - as a cig smoker, never knew you could DTL - just Googled it, then tried it - weird in the extreme

They explained in the OP that they are using an iStick40W and are using prebuilt coils for Nautilus tank...

Don't worry about it. A vent is easy to avoid. Just follow basic battery safety tips and keep your resistance at a manageable level. The stories you hear about hands exploding and people losing teeth are basically about stupid people who want to act cool and "blow sick clouds bro."

You are completely safe. You were given bad info just now. Your device is Regulated which protects from shorts, etc. Using a prebuilt .7 ohm is beyond fine. If your device wasn't meant to fire it it wouldn't allow you to. It would say resistance too low. I'm sorry someone just scared you. It was unnecessary

Edit: Just saw your last post after I posted this. Thank you for correcting

Their device has a built in battery and is safe to fire down to .05.

I understanding you're wanting to help but this isn't a high Amperage, low resistance, build thread. It's a very basic question about the difference between two coils

I was the same way when I first started out on an RDA. My first build was a pair of basic 4-wrap coils. My friend basically snatched the mod from my hand when I showed him what I was running and he built me some "safer" (his words) coils. It's what prompted me to join this forum in the first place. :D

No worries - bit of scaring means some Googling and then learning - I know way more than I did a while ago!
Definitely... Just didn't want you to get scared away

Yeah we've all been there with people. Low resistance wire, too few wraps, wrong batteries, etc etc etc. You wouldn't believe the amount of stupid shit I've seen. I was very grateful when they finally built chips that could fire at .05 etc. It made it so that, no matter what, a noob had no reason to buy a mech.

Watching people put tanks, with flush pins, on hybrid tube modes was the worst of all. They truly didn't understand how idiotic they were being. I have watched so many run away mods from shorts like that. But we are in the world of safety now. Well it's never 100% but at least the device has removed 99% of the user error

My Hohm Slice supposedly fires down to .05, at least from what I've seen from Googling. Nifty little mod, although built like a child's toy. When I go out hiking, I'm out of options now that I've busted my G-Priv when it fell out of my pocket onto a boulder pile in the mountains. Shallow pockets + expensive mod = RIP. It's become a bit of a running joke at the store, LOL! Since we're talking about doing stupid things, I thought I'd throw that one out there!

I hope this serves as a lesson to the op here! :D

Hey duttonn -
One coil takes a little more wattage than the other. No worries on battery mishap, just set it to what you like. Don't worry about coil life, you'll find that out as it can be diff for diff folks. And if you run it at a higher wattage and get a shorter lifespan from them, it doesn't matter.
Since you've tried both coils you know which one you like best. Just buy a 5 pack or 2 and keeps those handy. House, car, work...b4 too long you'll know about how long they each will last for you. The main thing is to not run out of them. To not smoke is what matters most :). Even if you use a lot of coils, still better...

Leaks is something you don't want, as there are too many that do not.

Exactly, I buy 2-3 of (whatever) tank I am using at the time. I buy extra glass, o rings etc as well. Then, like you said, figure out what coil you like and buy a bunch. Going back to smoking, because of something stupid like not having coils, would be horrible.

If you have leaking, try this and start at about 8:30. BTW, Nice setup you have for putting a stopper on those sigs. I also quit with Nautilus(original/back when 1.8&1.6 coil) and a variable wattage mod
He shows how to "burp" the tank. Close the AF, fill, start the threads till the gasket starts touching, turn upide down. and let air pocket got to whats now the top, then tighten the rest of the way.

Triton Mini coils fit Nautilus 2 and there's a couple interesting ones. If you like the 1.8 there's a clapton coil that will boost flavor, and a 1.2 ka which is obviously between 1.8 and .7

Has anyone asked what the nicotine level is in your juice? You could probably get away with vaping 9 or maybe even 12mg juice at both 0.7 and 1.8 ohms, but anything higher than 12 mg, if you're vaping a lot using that 0.7 ohm coil, you could be taking in an awful lot of nicotine.

Also 50/50 is a little thin, I think, for that 0.7 ohm coil. If you decide to alternate between coils, you'll need 70/30 vg/pg and 6 mg or less nic for the 0.7 ohm coil, and 50/50 12 mg or more nic for the 1.8 ohm.

You'll need more air for the 0.7 and less for the 1.8. Different flavor, different temperature of the vapor, different cloud production, different world. :)

*nodding* I use maximum vg nicotine base juice. The coils I run range from about 0.30 to 0.50 Ω. Use 18mg/ml nicotine strength though, always have.

From what I understood when starting due to absorption rates, one can figure they get roughly half the nicotine. So doing 6mg/ml you get 3mg/ml and so on.

Not sure if that is accurate but the way it was explained seems to make sense considering physiology, toxicology. No not an expert in either but got a good rough "working / layman's" knowledge.

Do agree use thicker juice when using sub ohm coils. Be aware of your nicotine strengths. Start getting headaches, sweaty when you vape drop your nicotine a level, so if at 9 mg go to 6 mg. Also, keep hydrated.

Differences between sub ohm and ohm plus coils? It all depends. There's other vectors/factors to consider as well. One difference I find is sub ohm coils give some modest sized clouds.

That might also be due to airflow, wicking, juice though. Then, you have to consider environmental factors/vectors as well barometer, altitude, wind variance, temperature, sunny or overcast, ... you get the point.

*chuckles just a little* Bright Eyes, a.k.a @nadalama is a she. You're correct though she is with the pack of us hardcore vapers. She also runs with the hack the world crew. Yes, were the sort what use wrenches for hammers if we got no hammers, or rocks, or someones head. *grin* "Did it solve the problem?" "Yep." "All good then." "Golden."

if you were refering to me, then i assure you no offence was taken.
My apology was for anyone really. Seems a lot of times I'm keen to come across as a bit menacing, intimidating. I also am naturally kind of silent. Accidentally startle folks and by them not having noticing me walking up on them.

Sometimes, if i feel need of politeness I make noise. In either case these are things which I seem to do/be without actually meaning to do/be, merely a natural inborn simmering stillness in me.

Yes, will admit in all humility, I've had my butt kicked quite a bit. I've kicked quite a nit myself. Not proud, or ashamed. Not the best or worst, just myself. I abhor violence in so far that it's a last resort unless for self preservation, preserving those I love, defending ones unable to defend themselves.

Quick glimpse at me? I was the middle aged guy in a greasy spoon saw an older guy, 90's or better standing. I saw a couple chairs turned with seats away from him. Got up from our table, walked over and turned one round for him. Walked back to our table, sat back down. Older guy looked as though he was going to fall, I wouldn't have said that to him for nothing.

Some of the younger twenty to thirty something guys in the place took note. They hung their heads but nodded at me and with heads hung hid their tears that they hadn't helped.

a couple of weeks ago i walked through our large park in the city fairly late at night, i walked past a lady sitting on a bench. she looked tired, scruffy and had odd shoe on. i asked if she was ok. very politely she replied she was.i asked if she wanted/needed anything, after first saying no, she said a coffee. there is a van allways at the entrance to the park. i dug in my pockets, had no change, all i hab were some $20 notes. i lookedd at her and gave her one, she refused but i made her take it.
2 days later i walked back through the same park, i heard a shout, looking around the same lady came to me. she had $16 and a receipt for a coffee!!
i allmost cried! it took me 20 mins to get her to keep the change.
she was a classy lady.
