DIY Juices.....to sub-ohm or not to sub-ohm, that's the question

Howdy folks,

Did some DIYing of juices a few years ago, and stopped, don't remember why, but am starting up again. The way I vape has changed. Used to be I was using a VV or VW device (Vamo/MVP), with kayfuns or rebuilt Vivi Novas, with 1.0-1.2 coils, at somewhere between 5 and 10 watts. I now use a DNA 40 and a Sigelei 75 watt with Uwell Crown tanks with .25 heads at about 30 watts. For me, flavor is more important than cloud, but I love to see cloud, lol.

Should I alter recipes in any way, for the sub-ohm setup (love the airy draw), or should I maybe pickup some of the 1.2 Uwell heads? My first couple of juices will be a Banana's foster and a Somoa's cookies....maybe a Buttery Nipple as well. So you can see I kinda enjoy the sweet stuff. Usually a 50/50 mix.

I'm wide open to your suggestions based on your experiences. I've tried searching for info and get bits and pieces. Is there any other info I could provide?

I'm an old retired guy who quit analogs over 3 years ago by vaping. Hope ya'll can give me a hand.

The 1.2 crown heads are my least favorite for flavor!

I didn't adjust my DIY at all - just realized how very good it tasted subohm :) But I did switch from high PG to high VG, and I also had to half my nic leve.

Hi Amanda.

Thanks for the input, I've read a large number of your posts here.

Yeah, I did cut my nic down by 1/2 to 6. I haven't tried the 1.2 yet. Can I ask why the pg/vg change? Looking for more cloud or is there a different reason?

I couldn't care less about clouds, although they do happen subohm generally! I increased my VG because the PG made the mix pretty harsh - and also because I do DL more than I used to, and that's pretty rough with high PG.

Howdy @CurlyxCracker,

Yeap, one of the things I remember from my DIYing days. I kinda figure that my first experiment might be to make the same juice in 10ml bottles, each one making a 10% jump in VG to see which mix hits closest to the sweet spot. It's been probably 2 yrs since I've had anything other than a 50/50 mix. Yeah, I'm an old fart who found what he liked and kinda quit looking into other ways to vape...ya know what I mean. Kinda fell into a rut but now I decided to sort dig myself outta that rut. Started by changing to sub-ohm a few months ago, time to move to the next major change.....DIYing the juice!

Guess I need to get a dripper so it's easier to try numerous different variations before dropping new juice into a tank as well.

Thanks for the assist CC, appreciate it.

Any other words of wisdom you can provide, I need all I can get don't cha know!!

Got a bit lucky I guess....daughter is bringing me a boat load of concentrates she's not using. Said she stopped DIYing a few months ago and has no use for them. We'll see if it's actually a lucky thing or not, hahahah, her intentions are always good but ya can never tell with my daughter. She's almost as warped as her father, lol.

I envy that rut! I get shinyitus frequently, and am constantly in need of something new to taste.
Nicotine will also play a huge role in harshness. I'm a VT nic guy, but hear a lot about nude nicotine. Also get yourself a scale! OMG is it ever simple. Clean up is a breeze as well! Just make sure it measures out to hundredths of a gram. And look for one with a minute timeout. @wllmc had a great video on using a scale if you've never used one before, for mixing.

I concur on the scale. Used to use syringes etc... too much clean up, mess, residue, etc. Once I went with the scale I've never looked back. It's so much easier and way less if any mess.

I'd start 60vg/40pg and work up from there personally. I usually mix a 70/30 or 75/25 myself. With the way a lot of tanks have changed now going sub ohm and all you might be ok since you're using factory coils. I'd worry about leaking with thinner juices with the way the juice channels have gotten a lot bigger but I can't say that to you for sure. I only use rebuildable tanks because I'm too cheap to buy coils when kanthal and cotton are cheap. Also the reason I got into diy. As much as I vape I'd go broke buying these "premium" (tongue in cheek) juices.

Of course anytime I'm worried about if a tank might leak or not I only fill it partially full and wait and see. No leaks, filler up!

On your original point; I would not alter your recipes except as others have stated, I'd bring the nicotine down, which you already have. Have fun and happy mixing!

Howdy Folks,

Howdy lownote2, thanks for joining in with info.

Using syringes etc has not been a big mess for me in the past, but the clean up required has left alot to be desired. As to using factory coils, only cause I got them on sale (used my points as well) and was waiting for the RTA deck for the Uwell....got it now and will be trying a build on the next juice change. Did a build on the Triton without much difficulty and it works well. I just seem to like the Crown a slight bit more.

I've never tried mixing by using a scale before. Yeah, I'm preparing by going over everything I can, recipes, tips and tricks, safety, etc. Liked the video you provided CurlyxCracker. Thank you for that.

Well, the Ejuice Me Up calc has grams on it but they are blank....a bit of checking and it seems I would have to add in weights of each ingredient. Actually looks like I'd have to add these each time I used a recipe. Hmmmm. Searched around a bit and found ELR calc. Looks like it calculates without extra input. Put the same juice in each and MLs came out the same so maybe I'll have to give it a try. Wish it was downloadable. @CurlyxCracker and @AmandaD, @lownote2, do you have other suggestions on calc's or do ya think the ELR will work for mixing by weight?

Checked the scale in the kitchen, it will go to tenth of a gram. Rats, guess I'll have to look into a different scale.

Thanks again folks,

Big Mac

Love the crown tank myself with the RBA. It's a really good tank. With the RBA it does leak some when I screw the top back on (builds pressure). I barely start the threads and then turn it upside down and finish scewing it down or just bottom fill it.

Best site I've found for measuring by weight is: http://e-liquid-recipes.com

You can save your recipes, add your flavors etc. It's a pretty hand site really.

Depends you printing/dragging laptop to mixing station or using tablet/phone?

Well @CurlyxCracker, I could do any of them, but in most cases I'll just sit here at my desk. When we setup our "office" we set it up so we had plenty of space to handle all the stuff we do, so there's plenty of room.

E-liquid-recipes is a great site. But I use it to look up info on recommended flavor percentages and flavor notes. For my personal recipies I use ejuicemeup...I can save the recipie to my computer, print a clean pdf of the recipie to take hand written note on (you can do that in the app, but I flavor test all the time and I don't take the personal laptop to work where 90% of my tests happen). I even have a recipie titled "start" that has all my preloaded info saved so all I have to do is just enter the flavors I want.

Here's a thread on mixing by weight.

I'm not sure but I think hot rods calculator does weight too. And the suggestion of a "start" recipe is a grand idea!
If using android, I suggest Liquix, it's $1.69 but a good app imo. Pm me I have an older version you can try out for free if you'd like. My only gripe is adding your flavors to your database before you can use them in a recipe. But it will also calculate the cost other mix as well which is kinda nifty I suppose.

Ejuicemeup already has a 'default' record for this very purpose ... just input your info and select 'Save as Default' under the 'File' menu. :)

Right on the money NGAHaze, it'd s nice feature. I've used "E-Juice Me Up" in the past, did my mixing via syringe, think I'm gonna go find me a scale and try by weight this time. Maybe set the weights up in "E-Juice", and will try the ELR mixing program some as well. Based on what I've been told (thanks AmandaD), read and watched, seems that 1ml = 1gram is pretty damn accurate for all but VG. VG being 1ml = 1.25grams, and that's not really much of a difference unless making very small or very large batches.

Well, first batch of flavors came in today, waiting on 2 other batches and what the daughter is bringing over and then it will be time to start. I have a nice list of what I'm gonna be trying right off the bat......Bananas Foster, Samoa's girl scout cookie, a Milk Man Clone, Buttery Nipple, gotta have a good coffee and for some reason unknown to me I have a real hankering for a nice thick butterscotch.

Howdy @Chrispdx,

I sent you a PM, take a look, see the reasoning behind sending the info to you directly instead of posting, let me know what you think please.

Test your recipes with the setup you ALWAYS use. This is so that you're making recipes based on your preferred vape. This is because, as you know, flavors taste different at different temps. I always vape at around 0.3-0.4ohm's so all my recipes are based with that preferred set up. I used to actually post with my recipes, preferred Temps. So like after my recipe I'll write "BEST AT 430F", and this is so that anyone with Temp Control can get EXACTLY the flavor I intended.

Wayne, I have some problem which need your advice. I mixed some recipes. They all taste good with dripper but tasteless with tank. May i know what could be the problem? Our flavours contribute 20 to 30% of one bottle.

Really appreciate if you could help.
Looking forward to your reply.

I think it's up to you ..one of the cliches I hear alot is ..taste is subjective...which is BS....tastes are subjective..I may like spicy food, you may not you may love Thai food I don't....that is subjective...but the ability to detect flavors is not subjective, some people have a better palette than others.that is why some people get paid lots of money to be proffesional tasters, and others eat at taco bell......I think it's your call based on your pallete....I hear you though I recently got a new atty and it delivers such intnse flavor that I've thought I could step the % of flavorings down in my juices for this atty.
