quit smoking, been vaping with a vv for a bit, im looking into mechs. I have ohms law down, i understand battery voltage, im going to purchase a multi meter, quality battery charger, probably a kick 2 to be safe. my question is, im not cloud vapping, just vapping to keep from not smoking cigs, so when it comes to coils, do you have to "build one" or do you just buy one?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I've been reading and don't really understand this part.

What I do know is...

Don't let your batts dip past 3.6
Stay at a respectable ohm level

A general answer to your first question:

No, you dont have to build coils. You can buy tanks that have replacement coils if you would prefer it. Most replacement heads (coils) for these different tanks are a bit hit and miss in my experience. What I mean by that is that you may buy a tank that uses replacement heads ( coils) and purchase five replacement heads. Maybe three out of four of them will taste fine and last you a couple weeks or so. Maybe they will be good for one week. Maybe they will be good for a day. maybe you will get a bad one. Its just chinees quality control/mass manufacturing that causes this to happen. Hell, you may get lucky and get 10 good ones in a row.

Each of these replacment coils may cost you 2.50 to 5 bucks each.

If you learn to wrap your own coil and install it, the coil will cost you about 2 cents or so and when you get it figured out, it will normally be a bettter vape than the pre made head (coils)

A coil that I make will last me for months. I just have to replace the cotton or Rayon every so often when it gets funky.

My two cents.

Good to know! Thanks. So when I purchase a mech mode, should I plan on building from the get go?

If you purchase a mech mod, you will definately need to learn to build your own coils. If available, go to your local vape shop, buy an inexpensive topper (dripper) for around 8 to 12 bucks and tell them you would like to buy it if they will show you how to wrap and install a coil for it. I found its best to watch someone do it in front of me. If they will make you do it in front of them, thats even better.

Awesome! Luckily I have quite a few vape shops around my area. (1 literally directly across the street from my place lol) I'll stop in and see what happens, I'll let you know how it goes! Thanks so much

After you have experienced that dripper for a few days or so, you may want to get you a rebuildable tank like a Kayfun V4 or something so you wont have to drip juice in it so often.

If I were new to vaping, I would get an Istick 30 and a dripper, then get a rebuildable tank later or at the same time, to put on it as well.
That will be cheap, no batteries and charger to buy, has a built in ohm reader as well.

I would probably get them to wrap a 1.0 to 1.4 coil on both just for starting out and go from there.

My two cents. Opininions will vary.

So I just went to my local vape shop, forget them lol. Had a kid working...not that I'm an expert but I wanted to question him to see if he know his shit or not, so I asked him, "can you use lithium batteries in these mechs"? (Playing dumb), and he goes "ughhh well I I I think you can, I mean double As should be good." I said oh cool, thanks! See ya!!!

Anyways, know of any tutorials of step by step (video/pictures) which show how to make or use your first mech (assemble, build coils, fill tank, check volts/ohms etc...

Thanks in advance! Happy weekend to all.

You can go to your local vae shop and you tell them what you want and they will explain what would be best and they may be able to build it for free or for a small price such as 3 to 5 dollars

You're on the right track @rades - kind of.

Is there a reason you're wanting a mech mod? In this day and age I'd think a regulated device would be safer, simpler, and not much more money. And a tank with factory-built coils (if that's what you're looking for to start) would perform a lot better on a regulated device. I might suggest something like a Subtank, that has a rebuildable deck you can learn on and factory coils you can pop in if your builds aren't going right and still vape.

Here's my big thread of things to consider for beginners - please spend a few minutes with it if you get a chance, hopefully it'll answer some questions or help you think of some more to ask...

You can buy a mechanical mod and use pre-built / disposable coils for as long as you want until you're ready or willing to get into RBAs. I used cartomizer tanks on my first mechanical mod before I decided to learn to build my own coils. It seems that sub-ohm tanks with disposable coils are very popular today. I find that building my own RBAs is a lot cheaper than disposables and my builds are better, I can target my preferred resistance, and I enjoy being self-sufficient. There's no rule that states that you must use RBAs with mechanical mods. Anyone who says otherwise is just wrong.

Any B&M that would charge to build coils or teach you to build them would be on my shit list.

The thing is, coils are really easy to wrap, install and add wick.

A properly built and maintained coil can last easily for MONTHS!

At the cost of about 1 cent as opposed to $2 + premade coils and wick which will last about 3 weeks tops!

Well some times it is easier to go to the shop because it is hard to get the right ohm or sometimes you don't know what you want until some one shows you

Well I'm kinda new to the rebuild thing. I got a eleaf I stick 50w, I got a kangertank sub mini with it. The tank kit is cool in that you can use premade ready to go coils but it also comes with an rba and coils, cotton and screw driver to put the coil together. I love the tank and coils though it's true that some preform better than others. I was all proud of myself today because I put cotton in the rba and I'm using annnd it worked great! A baby step to building for me!!! Just thought I'd share...hood luck with it! I'd love to hear how it goes for you! Also you tube has great videos on how to rebuild coils!!!

If u dont exceed the amperage of the batterys u purchase u will b fine, for example if the battery has a 40 amp limit and say a 60 amp ramp up time plz dont try and get more out of it hence there is a reason the button is giving u a sting, even the 26650s only has like 20 to 40 amps, bigger battery doesnt mean more amps, know the quality of the mod too, a really good well built copper mod will perform real good for u, a ohms meter will not give u the amperage, so use the ohms law cac on the internet, there is plenty of videos on youtube to show u how to build a coil, i usually build macro coils 6 or 7 wrap just to stay in my limit.

If you get a Kanger Subox kit, you'll have all your bases covered. The OCC coils are reliable and easily sourced. The rebuildable section is included and super easy to build on when you decide to give coil building a shot. The subtank mini doesn't leak. Great tool for the initial quit. No fuss, just works.
