Movies are often accused of dumbing things down, making that which is complicated appear to be simple. The brilliant new drone war thriller from director Gavin Hood, Eye in the Sky, does not take that route. It is anything but simple.
It does, however, start off simply enough as a joint operation is taking place between the British, U.S., and Kenyan militaries. They are attempting to capture some high-ranking Al-Shabaab terrorists in Nairobi. This being a "modern" war, the Brits are in England, the U.S. team is in the States, and the Kenyans are on the ground near the terrorists. Colonel Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren) is running the operation, coordinating the capture which will be executed by the Kenyans as the U.S. drone pilots provide visuals of what is taking place and act as backup with their Hellfire missiles.
