Epic Games, the studio behind Gears of War, very nearly made Gears of War 4.
Game Informer reports that the developer started cooking up the would-be Gears of War 4 while fellow studio People Can Fly worked on Gears of War: Judgment. Apparently, the upcoming Gears of War 4 doesn't completely ignore that game's original vision.
When Microsoft bought the Gears franchise from Epic they passed the series off to The Coalition -- formerly known as Black Tusk Studios.
This is the team now bringing Gears of War 4 to life, using the setting and central protagonist (JD Fenix, son of Gears of War central figure Marcus Fenix) originally envisioned by Epic. Though the new villains -- known as The Swarm -- were "completely changed" during the transition.
