George Takei has know for a while that Star Trek Beyond's Hikaru Sulu would be openly gay in the new film—and though he's happy there's a gay character in the film, he's not pro the decision.
Actor John Cho, who plays Sulu in Star Trek Beyond, revealed his character will have a husband and a daughter in the new film, making Sulu the first openly LGBTQ character in the series. It's intended as an homage to Takei, who publicly announced he was gay in 2005. Takei, however, doesn't see the gesture as that.
"I'm delighted that there's a gay character," Takei told The Hollywood Reporter. "Unfortunately, it's a twisting of Gene's creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it's really unfortunate." The prolific actor would have preferred writer Simon Pegg and director Justin Lin to respect creator Gene Roddenberry's vision for the character.
