An aggressor has the intent of being violent. A defender has no thoughts of being violent. The only thought is the best method to end the encounter. The aggressor is violent and the defender is caught up in the aggressors violence, but the defender is not acting in a violent manner. The defender is already in a violent act.
While I see your point, I don't agree. I think the defender is already in the violent situation. I don't think the defender, reacting in kind to the violence, makes it twice as violent as it was.
Sort of like setting a backburn to put out a fire. The fire itself is violent(damaging). Setting a backburn is not typically considered violent. You could define it that way. But I wouldn't.
