The electoral college is in place to make sure the popular vote is irrelevant, and permit those in power to redraw districts any way they see fit.

no dimwitt it was instituted so large urban areas could not impose their will on rural states with smaller populations....it helped "level the playing field" otherwise you'd have immigrant slums(full of people who have never seen an Indian) in New York imposing their views on say..Indian affairs policies in rural Montana which could be, and was...disasterous.
